Broadsword for defenders?
I have seen new AT suggestions many times (even made some myself).
Sign me up for Melee/Support, but to make it work the character would need either some form of protection to survive the early levels like a single resist or defense toggle and/or a few more HPs.
One of my last suggestions was to make two new ATs (one Villain and one Hero side).
The Hero side AT was called Protector, with Assault primary (Dominator sets) and Support secondary (Defender primary sets). The inherent was going to give status protection or increased damage based on teammates. The inherent could be tweaked many ways.
The Villain AT was going to be called "Trickster" and would have Assault primaries and defense secondaries (like Brutes/Scrappers). This would be kind of a hybrid Dominator of sorts, because the inherent was going to be something like a swap ammo power but with each option giving a different mezz effect as a proc off your attacks. You could choose,for instance, stun, confuse, hold, KB, sleep etc.. You could have some interesting strategy and fun with this.
BIOSPARK :: DARKTHORN :: SKYGUARD :: WILDMAGE
HEATSINK :: FASTHAND :: POWERCELL :: RUNESTAFF
I'd sign up for BS ported to Defs. Heck, leave the set alone as much as possible. Just change the damage scale the debuff scale, etc, and you'd be golden. Swap BU for Aim as needed.
Since I don't think Confront or Taunt would be ported directly to Defs, I'd say may the -recharge still be the same amount (-75%) instead of scaling up to the normal def debuff levels, but instead perhaps increase the duration. I'd lessen the taunt duration on the def version. I'd prolly also keep the Taunt effect single target, like confront, but make the -range part AOE like taunt.
I might change up the power sequence a tad, but might not. But in general, the less changes needed to me made in a port the better. Just make sure to properly adjust the scaling.
I made a DS/DM Mastermind with a melee theme using air superiority and the second whip attack (the short range one). Damage for myself isn't that good but it's not horrible. Survival is ok until the ember demon dies, taking the resistance buff with him. A melee defender might be ok when teaming but would solo poorly, with a possible exception in BS or Katana if you can live long enough to hit twice with parry/divine avalanche. With the defender adjustments to defence buffs, after the second parry, you'd be nearly untouchable in melee. Possibly unfairly so.
Just for shiggles, here's what direct ports of a few broadsword powers from the scrapper version would look like in the hands of a level 50 defender. I assume the defender ranged 0.65 damage scale is used so as not to unfairly penalize them, much like melee ATs get to use their melee damage scale with ranged powers.
Slice: 8s recharge, 8.53 end cost, 1.05 acc, 44.46 damage, -12.5% defense for 10s, 130 degree melee cone
Build Up: 90s recharge, 5.2 end cost, +20% tohit for 10s, +80% damage for 10s
Parry: 3s recharge, 4.37 end cost, 1.05 acc, 30.36 damage, +20% def(melee, lethal) for 10s
Whirling Sword: 14s recharge, 13 end cost, 1.05 acc, 36.15 damage + 10.84 DoT, -12.5% defense for 10s, 8' radius PBAoE
Disembowel: 10s recharge, 10.19 end cost, 1.05 acc, 70.85 damage, -12.5% defense for 10s, 75% chance for mag 4 knockup
Head Splitter: 14s recharge, 13.52 end cost, 1.05 acc, 93.98 damage, -12.5% defense for 10s, 60% chance for knockdown
Damage numbers compare okay to blast sets, though the damage typing is horrible, of course. A solo defender would two-shot many even level minions with Build Up, Head Splitter, Disembowel; +1 minions if solo. You give up range and wide radius areas of effect, but look at that Parry! The devs would have to think of something creative to substitute instead of Confront/Placate/Taunt.
Bah, I've already had a Broadsword Defender!
Play the Croatoa arcs. Get the Iron Sword. Use it often. Flashback the arc to recharge as needed. Ta da! Broadsword Defender.
it has gone from unconscionable to downright appalling that we have no way of measuring our characters' wetness.

long before IO's there was a melee defender thread using kin/darks with Air Superiority and Flurry.
It was a fun idea and i loved it till about 25 when i started face-planting alot.
It should at least be more survivable now with IO's.
and like konshu said, you could always find a sword.
