They're already having that discussion for the cameras, from the TV crew to AMC's sizable post-Walking Dead audience. That's a lot of total strangers who are listening to their fantasies about Power Girl, et al. How would having a female cast member put them in any less comfortable a position?

Funny thing... Power girl is never mentioned >.> At least not that I remember.

As far as Kevin Smith fighting with this... I doubt it as the last time i heard about his take on reading this type of stuff is that he doesn't so he might not even know about it or if he does might not care about it. I dunno I don't follow people on twitter or listen to smodcast.

Smith seems to be deliberately setting up a retrograde image with his "reality" TV show for mainstream consumption. (And Durakken, if he was misquoted, then he's probably already begun an epic Twitter campaign against the Observer.)
If the store has no female employees before the show, then what you see in the show IS the reality of that store and hiring a female employee just to have some "balance" for the show would then be staged and not reality.
