Yeah, making him a major character or dare I say "Sidekick" to Stallone-Dredd didn't help things at all. Plus Stallone as Dredd and of course the lack of helmet for most of the movie.....

I'm trying to remember that villain but it escapes me. Still the movie sounds like the basic origin-setup for franchise sequels that we have come to expect from new franchise debuts.

Still if a sequel is done, I think Judge Death would be the best villain, if a third movie comes then give us all 4 of the Dark Judges. Just please, PLEASE do not give us:

1. Judge Dredd vs. Batman, I've never been a big fan of such comic franchise crossovers.
2. Judge Dredd vs. the Aliens, this was done in the comics, leave it there.
3. Judge Dredd vs. the Predator: same reason as #2. No need to have a huge "rights/royalties" issue or debate. Dredd has plenty of villains from his own universe to deal with, no franchise crossovers. Granted the Predator would make a good foe for the Judges and Dredd....

Gotta say, the film will have to go some to beat the current Mega-epic in the comic. Day of Chaos rocks - and it's not even reached the main event yet after over thirty parts.

Sov agents, chemical plagues, P.J. Maybe in hiding, the Statue of Judgement down, Dredd barely surviving an assassination attempt... I just hope the main event keeps it rocking.

Yeah I've been reading about that, and I have that proverbial bad feeling about it. Anyone here remember when DC Comics was trying to make original Dredd material? Yuck.

IDW might do him justice. I mean, I HOPE they get the British sensibilities considering the OTHER Icon they're taking on from this sceptered isle:- http://snipurl.com/22s7cpn

I do have some confidence in IDW. As a third party comic company they do release some good stuff. Dark Horse though, i.m.o., has lost it a long time ago.

DC tried to sanitize Dredd a bit too much and for a character like him that just won't work. Technically you could say he's Punisher with a badge, and that may end up being how he's portrayed by IDW, but that would still not be a correct interpretation in my opinion. He acts within the laws of Mega City One and the authority that all judges have, he just takes it to extremes at times. There was one time, he fatally shot someone that was resisting. The person's crimes mandated a life sentence, so Dredd has the guy put in suspended animation so that they can be healed one day and then put in prison to serve their sentence. A tad extreme perhaps, but hey....Dredd IS the law

I hope the new movie does well enough to merit a sequel and that Judge Death is the sequel villain.

With regards to the situation you mention there, that's probably my bigger fear for the film. Dredd is a Black Comedy. To interpret it correctly, that element needs to be maintained.

Yes dark humor, morbid humor, even gallows humor as well as satire are all elements of Dredd. Still the fact that one of Dredd's creators was on the set during making the current film and liked what he saw is a promising sign. I suspect the movie will be a hit overseas where the franchise hails from, and may be more of a cult hit over here. We'll see.

Just keep the helmet ON
