Difference between test server and vip beta server?

If I follow the instructions in the announcement sticky up at the top of this forum on how to access the test server, will i get into the VIP beta?

Why there isn't a sticky in the actual VIP BETA forums on how to get it up, i have no idea.

Test does not equal Beta. They are separate installations.

Setting up Beta is the same as Test, just put CohBeta instead of CohTest in the Target spot of the shortcut. e.g.:

G:\City\Launcher\NCLauncher.exe /LaunchGame=CohBeta

To answer the question in your subject:

The Test Server is the Training Room. Once upon a time, it's where all new stuff ended up for the players to test and give feedback on before it was pushed Live.

When Issue 9 came around, the Dev Team decided that the testing for it needed to be kept private, and so the first Closed Beta happened.

Of course, lots of people were upset that Test was closed off to them, because they wanted to test out potential respecs, and because PvP events are hosted there, so all can partake, regardless of server.

When Going Rogue came along, the Dev Team decided to set up a new server dedicated to testing it, and thus Beta was born. From GR/I18 through Freedom/I20, Beta was home to the Closed Beta Tests, and the Training Room was left open.

After the launch of Freedom, the Dev Team made the decision to keep the beta tests open to all VIP accounts, and renamed the server to VIP Beta.

Currently, all new patches first show up on Beta, then get pushed to Test, and finally pushed to the Live servers.

Chances are, you knew most (all) of that. But now the info is there for newer players.

Thank you for posting about this.

I am still a bit confused myself. I would expect the VIP Beta server to show up in the NCSoft launch window when it opens. However, it does not. I see "City of Heroes" and "City of Heroes Test" under the header "Installed".

In this case, is the Test version equal to the VIP Beta? If I update it will that lead me to VIP Beta, or do I have to perform a totally separate download and installation to reach the VIP Beta server?

I am a full VIP subscriber. Perhaps I'm expecting a type of behavior that isn't supported.

Thank you in advance for the help!

Make a new shortcut. In the Target line, put this:

"C:\Program Files\NCsoft\Launcher\NCLauncher.exe" /LaunchGame=CohBeta
(or whatever file path your launcher is located at)

This will install VIP Beta. You can cancel the actual install process and copy over your Test or Live folder into your Beta folder, which will save *some* downloading (but not all because the piggs are *seriously* different between test/live and beta, and the piggs are the bulk of the game)

Agg's, checkout my updated Sig and see if any of that will help the troubleshooting.

Also, how do I make my sig links just the names of the thread titles? I keep going WAY over this 5 line limit for some reason when I was doing it.

Hello, everyone!

First, thank you for all the help.

I confess that I was not totally sastified with the answer I received. So, I sent my question to Support, and here is what I heard back.

As I suspected there is indeed a link shown at the left of the NCLauncher window that is titled "COH Subscriber Beta". The folks at Support inform me that I must Update that to gain access to the VIP Test server.

Once updated, the "COH Subscriber Beta" header will move from the "Not Installed" section to the "Installed" section. I will then be able to access the VIP Test server.

Otherwise, the "City of Heroes Test" link takes everyone to an environment that allows testing of all aspects of the game as they are persently operating in Live.

To access upcoming content, you must be a VIP subscriber and use the "COH Subscriber Beta" link.

It is not necessary to create shortcuts on your Desktop: although that may work perfectly well.

Creating those shortcuts and using them will actually do the same thing that using the link to Update the (not installed) CoH Subscriber Beta would do. It will install the CoH Subscriber Beta client and move that link from the Not Installed section to the Installed section.

Since your previous post didn't mention you seeing Beta in the Not Installed section and your post actually said you didn't see it listed in the Launcher window it is very likely that Aggelakis' instructions were based on it either not being there or you not seeing it at all.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

Thank you, Texas

I agree that both methods are valid. I will also admit that I did not see the header for the COH Subcriber Beta when I first posted my question. Perhaps I was a bit tired at the time.

Even seeing it in the list left some doubt for me. Since I didn't see any references to it in the replies, I opted to see what the Developers had to say.

My last post was simply to communicate what they revealed to me. No disrepect was intended. Note that I have used the types of shortcuts discussed prior to the NCLauncher being introduced. I just felt that the Launcher might have a method internally to get me to my goal.
