X/Shield Character

Returning player (again). Trying not to burn myself out with a ton of alts. I have a support character I've always wanted to play set up, already have a 50 blaster, and now I'd like an offensive melee character using a weapon and shield.

Brute vs Scrapper
Axe vs Broadsword vs Mace

Leaning Axe only because I like the Roman axes I see pictures of here:

If there are any other unlockable maces I'd like to know about them.

I'm mostly curious if smash is a better choice than lethal. I know they go hand in hand usually, but I seem to remember robots being common and resistant to lethal? What's more troublesome to play a lethal or smash set? I've also done a BS scrapper before and had endurance troubles so that's the bottom of my list at the moment, but I do like parry.

Smashing is definitely better than lethal, and War Mace is generally better than Battle Axe overall anyway (although not by a huge margin, if you like the axe better). I've played both a broadsword/shield and a mace/shield from 1 to 50(+3), and I found mace/ to be the better of the two.

For a /shield character, in the absence of other factors, I vote scrapper - they benefit more from AAO's damage buff, and they don't run into the damage cap on Shield Charge. A brute would not be bad by any measure, but would trade some damage away for greater aggro control abilities compared to a scrapper, which may or may not suit your desires.

By the way, the wikia site is both extremely out of date and, last I heard, infected with malware. Use paragonwiki.com instead.

This, absolutely. It is and really always has been the superior site. Also, you aren't wrong about the malware on the wikia site.

Mace and Axe will give you more mitigation via KD.

Broadsword has -Def making everything eaiser to hit. In addition it has Parry, which bumps up your Lethal and Melee defense by 15%. In the early levels Parry become a godsent, letting you softcap melee before level 5, if you can keep it stacked. Whether you keep it at 50 or not is your choice.

Go War Mace/Shield Brute or Scrapper.

Come back and thank us.

Seriously though, I play mainly Blasters, so it shocked me when the damage done by my WM/Shield far surpassed anything I could do on the so called damage kings. From level 1 forward.

I also have a SD/SS tank. I'm sure an SS/SD Brute would be awesome as well. And SS/SD Scrapper if they ever port that set.

An SS Scrapper would kick so much butt...

Alright. I made a mace/shield scrapper.
Thanks all.

Very out of date and VERY infected. Completely wrecked my laptop a good bit a few months back.

On topic, though, I liked Fire melee/shield on brute. Interested to hear how mace is though!

Don't know how you'd manage that, seeing as how Parry doesn't unlock until level 8.

The rest of your points are valid though.

Oh yeah, Hi Khaun! Remember me from Pinnacle?

I'd go with Mace/Shield as well. It gets more high damaging attacks than broadsword, and gets an insanely high damage attack at level 8.

CLAWSANDEFFECT UP IN THIS MUTHAFU

Wait we did that once already.

Yes I do, but I set up on Freedom this time because of population. I tend to play late at night (I'm always awake 7pm->7am EST) and I need all the population I can get.

Fire and Earth Melee are also mildly weapon-ish sets, at least some of the time.
