A Call to Architect AExperts?

I just hopped onto the forums this morning to check out some stuff before work and ran across this thread in General Discussion.

I for one love tip missions myself and think they are some of the best content we've seen released and would love to see more added to the game. I don't know about the rest of you, but I would be rather interested in creating a bunch of one-shots for other players to answer this call.

Good luck getting anywhere near the same number of plays the average tip mission gets... then again, since those are limited in number, maybe that doesn't really make sense. Still, give it a whirl, who knows? I tend to bog myself down with creating rather involved scenarios (3+ missions per arc), maybe this would be a good way to avoid that.

I enjoy short story arcs and wrote a couple done-in-one missions myself. I occasionally get feedback like "That would've been a great radio mission", so I agree that there must be some player demand for more tip missions or radio missions.

Crisis at Talos Towers (#518075) H43-49
A Rikti dropship has struck the Talos Towers, causing massive structural damage and setting them on fire. First responders attempted to evacuate the building, but have themselves been trapped by the fire and debris. They need a hero. Can you help?

Attack of the 50 Foot Villain (#363366) V41-54
An accident causes you to grow to giant size and attack Tokyo.

Here are some more one-mission arcs by other authors that I've enjoyed:

The Murders in the RWZ Morgue (#452144) H35-54
You are sent to the Vanguard base to catch a killer. Mystery.

Storming Citadel (#379488) H5-10
You're miniaturized and enter Citadel's brain to make repairs.

Big in Sumeria (#328391) H25
Help the Spirit Busters battle paranormal manifestations. Ghostbusters homage.

Chris Jenkins: Attorney At Law (#204942) H1-14
Even lawyers deserve to be saved from rampaging Hellions....don't they? Comedy.

The Bestest Radio Mission Ever (#1526) H35-54
Amusing mash-up of every radio mission in the game. Parody.

Trademark Infringement (#2220) H35-54
Battle an army of villains with rip-off costumes and character concepts. Parody.

The Extadine Lab (#2595) H40-54
While investigating a new designer drug, you fall down a rabbit hole. Surreal.

I hope that helps. Have fun!

How well do you think people would respond to 3 or 4 "tips" combined with a morality mission at the end (all of them being one-shots, just compiled as a single "arc")?

I, too, enjoy tip style missions & would play them in AE if they were offered. Have you thought of any new scenarios that have not already been covered by the existing tip missions?

Having put a little thought into this topic ("writing one-shot tip-style missons for the AE"), I was reminded of something that's been nibbling away at the back of my mind from last time I ran a tip (something like two weeks ago I think):

The devs can take up all kinds of text space for story telling but AE keeps players' text space is limited.

Click on a glowie, beat down a destructable or whatever in a tip mission and you can get multiple paragraphs of info about it, while we only get 300 characters. Tips start with what, three screens? of info setting up the mission and the characters, player missions in AE get one screen of a thousand characters (the "mission start clue" does help though, but contributes to "clue overload"). And that's not even tossing in the newer mechanics the devs have, such as the ability to meet an NPC inside, click on him and get multiple speech windows (I would kill for this - I'd pay Paragon points too).

As I've been working a lot on AE stories lately (none of which have been publsihed yet, nope), I've been finding the limited text space more and more restrictive. I can't imagine I could fit much of a "real story" into a one-shot. I think the format is limited to being more like a "newspaper", which tend to fall into one of three catagories (with a little decorative tinsel tossed on for good measure): go beat up a boss, go click something, go escort someone out.

Then again, art being art, there are no rules that can't be broken well so I'm sure someone can come along and write some good ones. Just not me. Then again, if I give this more thought, maybe I'll get some ideas and end up eating my words.

I'd rather have more space for my words though.

ty for posting these PoliceWoman. I like to try AE missions kinda at random and most seem to be nothing but lots of fire creatures swarming at you.

I'm going to have to try those too.

My preferences are for one shot missions too. I'd rather there be a part two mission to play if I liked the first one.

I've written some one and done missions myself. Search for "Hero Space Corps" or "Blonde Brawler".

Casual player - but been around forever.
Lots o characters.

Hmm...

There are days when I would love to do nothing but one mission, story-rich AE fodder. For better or worse, those days are few and far between. I like longer story arcs, but only if the story arc is well-developed and has some underlying purpose to it. Five outdoor map "kill all" missions with an intro and epilogue do not a story make, eh?

One of the most fun MA story arcs I ever ran (this was shortly after it first came out) was four missions, all on huge maps. There were ambushes, patrols, unexpected clickable items, mid-map destructible items, a very unique fairy tale based enemy group, and a story about a young child trapped in a dream. One of the worse I ever ran was a single mission with an Eden map filled with Elite Bosses. (Hey, it had a great description, a fascinating intro, and an amusing epilogue, unfotunately the mission itself was really nothing but a boss farm for exp.)

I enter an MA storyarc the same way I start a book. The author has about thirty seconds to catch my interest. If they don't, the book goes back on the shelf or I bail the mission. There are thousands of missions in the MA database now. Why would I waste time on a mission that doesn't capture my interest right away?

But maybe that's just me.

The economics don't really favor one-shots, though. AE arcs cost the same from the store whether they're used for one-shots or 5-really-long-maps-in-a-row. Maybe if arcs were cheaper in the store (I keep waiting on them to go on sale at a nice discount to get some) ... as it is, way back when AE was new, I made a one-mission arc, mostly to see how my (still poorly IO'd) spines/dark would stand up to what I then thought was a silly number of ambushes - 3 whole ambushes! - while beating on an EB).

It's still around, with its original number (1043) if you want to see how you feel about it. (Oh ho did you see my slick little advertising bit there? How I slipped that plug in so 'cleverly'?)

Anyway, if arcs were cheaper/easier to come by, you'd probably see more short arcs around. And then you'd have even more people complaining they can't find just the arc they're looking for in the search interface "Because it's clogged with stupid short arcs!"
