City of Data: Cause and Effect

Happy New Year from the Titan Network!

To ring in 2012, we are happy to announce the first of several upgrades to City of Data, specifically to the detailed power information.

This update, entitled "Cause and Effect", focuses on streamlining and enhancing how power effects are shown, making them easier to read and understand.

  • The biggest change you'll notice is that many attributes of the effects are now shown as icons, reducing the amount of space each line takes up and making it easier to see at a glance. A lock icon, for example, represents that the effect is immune to Enhancements and Buffs, and always uses the displayed value exactly. Hovering over any icon with your mouse tells you what it is, and in many cases shows extra information.

  • There is also color coding to help see at a glance what an effect does. A light blue background means that an effect has a special condition. Dark green text means that the effect has a random chance to apply. Faded red text means that the effect doesn't apply at all, unless some other power (i.e. Fiery Embrace or Swap Ammo) modifies it. All of the colors are intended to supplement the text and icons; the site should be completely usable even with color blindness. If you do encounter some text that is difficult to read due to the contrast, please let me know so I can fix it!

  • Many new attributes are now shown as well. Several different stacking types are supported that previously were not. Effects that can be canceled have an X icon you can hover over to see what cancels them. Also, effects that are single-target-only in an AoE power, or have a reduced radius, now show that information.

  • The chance modifier used by Swap Ammo, Fiery Embrace, and a few others is now fully supported! The effects that are modified by these, or modify other powers now have hyperlinks you can click to get a list of powers that they affect.

  • A few bugs have been squashed as well. Some of the backend tables were revamped, and as a result the issues that people were seeing with some of the Lore pets are fixed.

  • Finally, the site itself has been streamlined, using the full browser window to show the data you want. Remember that you can always use the "City of Data" link at the top of the page to return to the start page.
Hope that everyone had a great holiday. Enjoy!

THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU for finally making the AT symbols clickable.... I don't know whether that happened with this update specifically or if it was one of the other semi-recent updates, but that's something that's been bugging me for forever. Very minor, I know, but that's one of those tiny little QoL things that just nags at you.

On a feedback note, the popup text when hovering over an icon is very hard to read. It's just standard black text with transparent backdrop on top of the regular text, and it's not easy to pick out. Shouldn't the popover text be in some sort of opaque text box or something so it's readable? This is what it looks like at the moment:

Not really easy to read. If it's not supposed to look like this, that screenshot was taken on a mac running safari under osx 10.6.

That doesn't look right at all. It looks like you have an old cached copy of the CSS.

Can you try doing a Shift+Refresh, or if all else fails, clearing your browser cache?

It was missing the background colors for the effect lines, too, which makes me think it was a cached copy of the old CSS.

I just put into place a band-aid to sidestep the cache issue and force everyone's browser to refresh the style sheets and scripts, hopefully.

That one was slipped in back in November I think. When I started working on it, I couldn't believe that they weren't clickable, and just had to go and change that. Glad it was an improvement for you.

Can you reposition the mouse-over tool tip to be further away from the cursor?. Right now, it appears under the cursor and the cursor is "in the way". Not a lot, but it is disconcerting.

Can you give it a try and see how it looks now?

I increased the horizontal distance a little, and the vertical distance a bit more. I don't want to push it too far out, since in order to click the links in some of them you have to be able to cover the gap to mouse into the tooltip before it disappears.

Looks better, thanks!
