Heelo, guys. I've got an odd problem that I cannot find the solution to, and since I can't figure it out, I figure I might as well ask you guys.

THe problem is this: When I boot up CoX, it goes through the motions as normal, until it reaches the "Loading for Log-In" splash screen, and then just hangs there. Occasionally it will go to black and Task Manager lists it as "non responding", and then it will go back to the splash and TM will say it is "responding". I have not to my knowledge installed anything before the troubles (This is a shared computer, and it is not mine.) and I have yet to run virus scans, although I did run a Malwarebytes scan. My system is behaving properly for a crappy little Emachines, so I doubt that that is the problem. I will run a scan tomarrow, as it is late here and I'm tired.

Anyway, I have found an odd little solution. I updated my graphics drivers when it first started freaking out, and I was able to play immediately after installing it. The next day, I was unable to play until I re-installed the drivers again. So, the game seems to work immediately after reinstalling the drivers for my graphics card, and continues to work until I either log out of Windows or shut the computer down. So yes, I can close CoX and reload it, and it works just fine.

I have tried running the game in safe mode, but it loads to the splash and then goes non-responsive, and Windows pops up that annoying "You wanna watch me look and not find a solution" window. I don't know if this happens just after I reinstall the graphics drivers or not; another thing for tomarrow.

Anyway, here's the CoHHelper stuff:

Blight, you don't have a 'uber' video card, but the thing I notice the most is all the extra sevices and browser helpers you have running in the background! These steal valuable space and resources from CoH. I would disable or delete as many as you can. (This will probably make your puter run faster, too.) I'd close these down first:

HijackThis---

CoH Helper---
Texture LOD Bias: Crisp
(I'd change this to SMOOTH)

Shadows Enabled: Yes
Blur: Bilateral

(Try turning these off, just to see if it helps)
With those off, you may be able to set world/character detail to 100% and get a very pretty game without much lag or glitches.
Hope this advice will help you. I have an old putersaurus that still has an AGP card, and my game runs and looks beautiful..only an occasional hiccup. Good luck, and I hope the great tech gurus on this forum can give you even better advice!

It doesn't sound to me like your programs in the background are having any kind of bearing on the problem you're having.

My first suggestion would be to use driver sweeper to get rid of every remnant of your the old video card drivers. It sounds like it is loading up the old drivers when you log into windows. After using driver sweeper, install the new drivers like normal and see if that makes a difference.

If you are in fact concerned about the back ground programs causing slowdowns in COH, AMD makes a great little program called Fusion, it automatically shuts down background programs( up to and including windows updates,virus/malware software, and those sort of things) with a single click, then can turn them all back on in a click when you are done playing for the day. Here is a link to the site to download it if you're interested:

It could be a driver problem.

But in general the computer is low on resources, so my suggestion is to try to load the game in "Safe Mode".
With the new launcher it seems a little more tricky. In the launcher click on the little arrow next to "City of Heroes", select 'Properties' and tick "Safe Mode".
Then try to launch the game and see if it does any difference.

The most recent drivers for that card and OS are listed as GeForce 285.62 Drivers. Is that what you have installed?

Those are the same ones I got for my GeForce GTX560, and they had problems, causing my card to overheat. You might want to try installing the GeForce 275.33 Drivers. Once I installed those, the card worked like a charm. Like you, CoH was the only place I was having this problem.

I suggest trying those, and see if they help.

Also, you shouldn't need to worry about DriverSweeper anymore. When you install the Drivers, it gives you an option to do a Clean Install, removing everything from your last install.

So, I decided to boot up CoH before trying anything for craps 'n' giggles and it's working fine, now.

I haven't done anything new whatsoever, so I'm guessing what's causing it to blitz out is something done by the other users of this computer, which means I get to go into "detective mode" and figure out what other people are doing to cause this problem.

Whee. Anyway, I'll post if I figure it out. I figure that what you guys posted will at the very least make my game run better, and that can't be a bad thing.

Thanks for the help, guys!
