Try before you buy IOs
This already exists. It is what players use the test and beta servers for. They copy over the stuff they want to test and try it out before they do anything to their characters on the live servers.
For those that don't have access to the test/beta servers, it's another of the incentives for subscribing.

does beta let you pick ANY enhancments to apply to the build? or do you still have to find/buy them?
You have to buy them, buy the salvage, and craft them all. However, there is often extra testing options available from the Merit Vendors and the Incarnate Vendors that allow 1 inf for the various merits.

That seems like a lot more work then it should be. I stand by my original suggestion. A WW contact that lets you try a build before you waste a respec, and buy/waste time on inspirations. Yes, Mids is a great tool, but I still can visualize the effects in game. Contact would let me do that.

As a note, while not all IOs are available this way, you can purchase an unlimited number of the attuned IOs from the beta market at a "cost" of 0 points. These enhancements are pre-made, so you don't have to hope the devs seed the market, or spend a lot of time copying over characters with Merits, or the like. Since the Rare sets are cycled out, though, you'll have to snag those during the windows they're being tested. Personally, I have several sets "in storage" for the sake of future mucking about.

I dont think you will get a lot of sympathy for that idea...
"Nothing is impossible for the man who doesn't have to do it himself." ~Midnight Flux's former boss.
There are usually two sides to every argument but no end.
Everything placed above this line is always IMHO, YMMV and quite certainly not to be taken too seriously....
You expect the Devs to take a lot of time to make a new interface to make a virtual respec, place enhancers you dont have, pop an instance plus a new interface to pick your enemy group just because you are too lazy to take a few hours to use the tools already available?

If a die hard fan with plenty of spare time wants to do it that way, I have no problem with it. It is just more of a time suck for the players than it would be for the devs.
Say it would take the devs 300 hours to build it. That's still far less time than the applicable players (combined) take now. That's on the current system for just one toon. Add to that number of the players that would use the new way, where they didn't have time for the current way. We also aren't including the potential YEARS of use.
Analagy: The devs give you a rope bridge to cross a ravine, Some one says they'd like them to make a full bridge, it would be faster. You say you would rather stick with the rope bridge? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Other people respond, "Why? We have a perfectly good main road going from point "A" to point "B" half a block from where you want to build that bridge."
First person answers, "Well yeah but ya have two stop lights to go thru on that road."
Other people, "So?"
First person, "I don't like stop lights."
Other people, "You do realize that people using the bridge will have to use stop lights at either end of the roads on both ends of the bridge, and there will be additional stop lights on both ends of the bridge itself. Right?"
First person, "What's your point?"
Other people, " That's 4 stop lights people will have to go thru, as opposed to the two that you want to avoid."
First person, "But I like bridges, and think of the years of potential use it will get."
Other people, " . . . And that's when we killed him Your Honor."
Judge, "I find the defendants Not Guilty. Clearly it was Self Defense."
Analogy: First person suggests, "Hey It would be cool if there was a bridge that went from point "A" to point "B".

Unfortunately all this information is wrong in application to what we're talking about. The bridge would have no lights, it would just have to be built.
other flaws in logic, it would NOT be a road with 2 light. it would be a round-about that would require a few cycles before exiting(transfereing toons enough to have the money to buy your enhancements) that leads to a railroad crossing (enhancments might not be in the market) That ends with a potential detour back to the beginning (the build doesn't work or fit the way you play). X1000 players.
So ... again it makes more sense to me for the devs to build that bridge than take the LONG way around with many potential problems.
I have no problem with paying for a small amount for a monthly access to this. But, it would be nice if it was available.
No it doesn't make sense for the devs to waste time and resources to build a third test environment just because you can't be bothered to use the Test/Beta servers.

Besides, this may mean nothing to you. But, it means something to me. Just like costumes or beast MM sets might mean something to you, but mean nothing to me. At least I realize that Someone wants something, I support them getting it and put what insight I can offer into it. I'm not the one that going to decide in the end if it get's build anyway. So, if you want just disagree and be done, do that. Though, the better and more constructive options are: give alternatives(like the posters on this subject have, and I thank you for the information on how to do do trial runs in test), or agree and sign. But, arguing with me just keeps my post near the top. So, thanks for that Way to be a team player. LOL
To those that have post on this. You are some of the people I am most interested in reading the insight of, though we don't always agree, because your insight is thoughtful, expirienced, and educational.
P.S. I was about to ask what the first to test options were; test/beta, right? Why is there a differense between those anyway?
It's not a waste if they make you pay for it ... and I would. either have it cost the same as a repec and last a month subscription. or 1/2 or 1/4 the price and be a one use thing. Because it doesn't ACTUALLY do anything in game, it would just be an aid.

Your idea itself isn't bad. I do think that changes could and should be made to the test/beta servers (one or the other) to make it easier to do the things you'd like. I just don't see them making a third test environment.
I think the problem the devs have with giving players that kind of access is that far too many would decide to use the test servers as a live server where they could simply trick out uber builds and ignore the rest of the game. Not to mention the screaming and hollering that would constantly go on when stuff gets wiped or locked out for testing new features/content.
To the P.S.: If my memory serves we had just Test up until GR. I think they made the beta to test Ultra Mode and work on Freedom in complete secrecy. Players could still use the old test servers and there was no possible accidental leaks between the separate test environments.
I believe they make people pay for access to the beta/test servers right now. I think it's only available to VIP's.

Have a 1 week life of transfered toons to the test or beta server. after that time, they get auto deleted. Add unlimited enhancments to WW/BM. How does that sound as far as options?
Arc#314490: Zombie Ninja Pirates!
Defiant @Grouchybeast
Death is part of my attack chain.
That would be pretty annoying for people who were actually using the test servers to test upcoming content.

They also have two types of test servers now days. The old test server could be used for testing the IO's and have an automatic timer that deletes characters after a week, while the Beta server could remain as it is for testing new content. They could also give Free and Prem accounts to just the old test server.
That way everybody wins.
Not really. The devs could program it so when they want to beta test new content they can disable the 1 week auto delete.

Make a contact in the WW/BM that lets you do a fake respec and allows you to put ANY IOs in your toon. then you can pick an enemy group and go fight them to see how you like your build concept. It would save lots of influence and time.
For obvious reasons, there would be no XP, influence, Drops, or anything like that for doing it.
There might be a Badge: Frugal badge. for doing it though.
I am not a numbers person and would prefer to be able to see some of my build ideas in action.
