ATI Graphics overheating only on lab maps
Of course it helps. The more info you can tell us the less we have to be Karnak and guess what you have.
Even very small details can be the difference. A problem could be with a certain memory configuration on a video card. Also, with all of the marketing "rebadging" and "naming tricks" of products its important we know as much as you can accurately tell us.

You are sure its the video card overheating?

well the driver does control what fan profile you use and also the default settings for it so perfectly possible.
I'm not aware of any AMD/ATi drivers that seriously messed that up (otoh NVidia did with about 3 versions of theirs).
I'm assuming you don't have your pc sitting next to a heat source - drawing hot air in won't help with cooling!
Apart from posting up your specs from the links already supplied by NewChemicals check that your graphics card fan(s) are working and not clogged with dust. Then do the same for your system fans. (Whilst your at it also check your CPU and PSU fans).
Some zones put a much higher load on the graphics than others - Praetoria, Arachnos Bases, one of the Labs, the new Atlas are all known to be particularly high.
Its sounding like your system is running near to its thermal limits normally and the extra demands from complex geometries are pushing it over the edge.

I have an ATI graphics card (I'm at work, so I don't have the model, but it's in the 5xxx series). I've noticed that when I'm doing a mission in the Praetorian labs (or the same map used in a tip mission, for example), my graphics card starts overheating. I have no problems with any other map. I can run for hours with no heating problems. But go to that map...even shortly after booting up the system...and I soon hear the "beep beep beep" of the heat alarm.
I'm open to suggestions (and I'll post my system info if anyone thinks it will help). I'm going back to the 11.3 drivers, to see if the <alt><tab> issue and other minor graphical issues are fixed. I can't see how the driver could be causing this, but software systems have gotten so complex, you never know. Mostly I'm just curious if anyone has had a similar problem. The labs don't seem incredibly detailed. I've never had the graphics card get too hot during intense events (e.g. Rikti invasions) or other maps. |
The way you can fix it is, get a stable 11.9+ driver. If I remember correctly, that helped with some fan/cooling issues. Personally, I'm using 11.10 on my 6870. Then, before starting the game go to task bar, near the clock. Find the icon that looks like an atom, then double-click it. In the Catalyst Control Center, which opened, click the Performance tab. Select the "AMD Overdrive" option. Make sure that Graphics Overdrive is enabled. Once that is done, select the Graphics Overdrive option on the performance tab. Enable "Manual Fan Control" and set the speed to roughly 75%. If need be, you can set it to 85% or so. Once done, click "Apply" and go about playing City of Heroes.
