You're right about the res cap.
You can't really make great use of it even with SoW as a Brute, as just basic slotting +2 RES IOs takes you to about 78% Res. It's over the res cap, but just barely.
To actually really take advantage of it, you need to slot it and take Cardiac Core - which is not really the best choice of Alpha slot for Katana/WP IMO.

Do you think you will have enough Recharge without spiritual to use the top DPS chain?
If so, you could take Musculature and my choice would be Scrapper.
If you can't and you will need, or plan to take, Spiritual - then my choice would be Brute.
The other big factor is the epic/patron pools. Still a hard choice there. Scrapper can get Shadow Meld. slotted, ridiculous incarnate trial level def half the time.
Brute can get gloom and some -tohit that effectively makes your already good defense better.
I debated this a lot before rolling a scrapper. I just wanted more of a boss killer this toon. Overall your damage will be close, but scrapper will pull ahead on bosses according to my calculations on mids. I've only played the scrap tho, so I can't compare in first hand Xp.

Willpower has a taunt aura, so you could go either way. I'd probably favor a scrapper in this case, but that might be because I've been playing a lot of Brutes lately.
It's too bad Katana/WP doesn't synergize well. Katana AoE is only okay and WP doesn't offer any extra AoE damage. It's sad that Parry isn't as strong with typed defense builds since it doesn't cover both smashing and lethal defense.
