Need help with StJ/Shield

Hi all,

I'm a long-time player of a SS/Elec Brute, but since the dawn of Street Justice, I was able to remake my main, Steel Spartan, as he always should have been: Street Justice/Shield Defense. My problem, however, is that in my many, many years of CoH, I've never actually played a Defense-based set, having a preference for Resistance-based sets.

My problem is that I'm level 31, using generic IOs (I don't slot sets until I'm 40+ because they're expensive to replace), I have all the Shield Powers available to me, Aid Self, Superjump, and a good spread of my main attacks. However, I get pasted WAY more often than is comfortable. I'm used to SS/Elec, like I said, which is really tough and while my brain knows I shouldn't expect that kind of durability, I still can't shake the feeling that something's not quite right. I shouldn't be this fragile. I know that, with Defense, I'll take my lumps when I get hit, but I shouldn't *be* getting hit, is the whole idea, so I come here, humbly asking for aid from those more learned than I.

I don't have Mids Herobuilder, as I don't like downloading 3rd party programs and couldn't make heads or tails of it anyway. I can provide any information needed to help raise me above the suckitude that I have fallen into.

Thanks.

Can you at least describe your slotting to us? Mid's isn't a bad program to get, and comes with zero spyware/malware. But without knowing how you're currently slotted, it's tough to offer up suggestions.

I would offer up a guess that your defenses might not be slotted as well as they could be, but I can't say for sure.

My checklist of things I would check on this build (if i was primarily concerned about my defense)

1. 3 lvl 30 Defense IOs in the first 2 toggles. 2 IOs is good too, but you'll lose about 1.6 defense. ( 17.6 vs 16.0 )
2. Do you have Weave? Again slotted for defense (5.86 defense with 3 IOs vs 5.35 with 2) Also having to get Tough (ok you don't have to, but why wouldn't you) gives the additional S/L resist making you even more resistant.
3. Combat Jumping- 1.75 defense base, throw a defense IO in the default and its 2.12
4.Steadfast +3% defense in True Grit. I know you said you don't get set IOs until 40+ but it maxes at 30 so there's no worry about replacing it with a Higher IO later.
5. Sounds like you have Phalanx Fighting so that an additional 3.75 when solo.

My Total with this is 32.33 to all positions (using the 3 Def IOs in each of the 2 main toggles and weave) Its a good start and about the best you can do on a Brute before Set bonus.

You could always take manuevers if you really want the extra defense, but its an end hog, and you won't need it later to softcap.

First, to answer Starwinds...

1. I do have 3 level 30 Defense IOs in both Deflection and Battle Agility.
2. I do not have Weave. I play melee characters exclusively and I've always managed to get by without *ever* dipping into the Fighting Pool. I'm hesitant to take yet MORE toggles to eat up my End bar. My playstyle is very much the neverending attack rush. I don't like downtime.
3. I don't have Combat Jumping. 2.12% Defense doesn't seem worth a power pick, now that I can skip it. Also, see above about MORE End toggles.
4. Don't have it yet. True Grit is slotted with 3 level 3 Heal IOs for the MaxHP.
5. I do.

As for my slotting, here's my setup, all with level 30 generic IOs unless stated otherwise.

Initial Strike: 2 Acc/2 EndRdx/1 Dmg
Sweeping Cross: 2 Acc/2 EndRdx
Rib Cracker: 2 Acc/2 EndRdx/1 Dmg
Combat Readiness: 1 RchRdx
Spinning Strike: 2 Acc/2 EndRdx/1 Dmg
Shin Breaker: 2 Acc/2 EndRdx/1 Dmg

Deflection: 3 Def
True Grit: 3 Heal
Battle Agility: 3 Def
Active Defense: 1 RchRdx
Against All Odds: 1 EndRdx
Phalanx Fighting: Karma: Knockback Protection/Luck of the Gambler: Defense/Global Recharge
Grant Cover: 1 Def

Health: Miracle: +Recovery
Stamina: 3 EndMod

Aid Self: 2 Heal/2 Interrupt Duration

Switch your dmg IOs out with recharge. Fury will take care of damage. Remove the karma knockback and put that slot in active defense with another recharge. That will be enough knockback protection. Look into getting a performance shifter +end IO, the stadfast res/def IO, the regen tissue +regen IO, and a numina regen/recovery IO. Those things don't need to be changed later and are easy to get these days thanks to tips and ssa. Especialy for those with multiple alts. With those changes, you will notice a performance change.

I'm antisocial so playing melee toons has always been the answer, recently coming to terms that teaming gets me to 50 quicker, but that being said my elec/sd was a eye opener. I did solo maybe %85 and like you have played mainly resist type AT's. But soloing my elec/sd was a fun and I learned early on that I had to change my mechanics in which I fight. Kite more is what I learned, and it worked for me.
IRC at my 30's I had 2 resists and 1 heal in true grit and 2 def 1 end redux in my main toggles. Pretty sure phalanax fighting was 1 def. Active defense only needed two recharge and worked like a charm on auto fire. I'd sell the karma ko for something more useful. It's kind of like Super Reflexes, it's a late bloomer set as well, by the time you are in your 40's you'll be rolling and having fun, at least I was.
My elec/sd is the only +3 toon that I have gone further with and by far my favorite and most fun to play. Good luck out there.

Get CJ. It barely costs any end and will help. And the steadfast +3, since you have money for miracle and LoTG, the steadfast is dirt cheap compared to those. Leave grant cover for later, or just skip it.

Weave is also recommended because /SD has low defense numbers compared to /SR. SD is only easy-ish to softcap on tankers and even that requires IOs and well, usualy, Weave. Plus Tough will double your s/l resist if you slot deflection for resist as well as defense.

You don't need the karma KB IO, shields has kb protection.
