alignment merit questions

I'm a hero. I do 10 heroic tips, then an alignment mission to confirm I am a hero.
Do I then just get alignment merits for playing?
Do I do heroic tips to get alignment merits? Alignment missions?

If instead of being a hero I switch to being a vigilante do I still earn alignment merits as a vigilante? Or are alignment merits just for heroes/villains?

Is there a downside to being a vigilante instead of being a hero?

Alignment merits (A-merits) are only for 'pure' alignments, meaning heroes and villains. Vigilantes and Rogues don't get A-merits.

The downside of being vigilante/rogue instead of hero/villain is that you don't get A-merits and can't enter Fort Trident/The Crucible. The upside is that you can travel anywhere on either side.

You get an A-merit every time you work through a series 10 tips + alignment mission.
Or you can pick one as a reward for the 'Who will die?' arcs.
Or you can convert 50 reward merits + 20 million inf into an A-merit in Fort Trident/The Crucible.

There are three scenarios for an alignment mission.

Scenario 1:
You used the alignment mission to change alignments
(Hero -> Vigilante; Vigilante -> Hero or Villain; Villain -> Rogue; Rogue -> Hero or Villain)
Reward: You receive an alignment change, and the 7 day countdown for your new alignment's alignment power. You lose the benefits of your previous alignment (including all applicable alignment merits and its alignment power or countdown to the alignment power).

Scenario 2:
You used the alignment mission to confirm an unconfirmed alignment
(Hero -> Hero+; Vigilante -> Vigilante+; Villain -> Villain+; Rogue -> Rogue+)
Reward: You receive reward merits. If you confirmed your original alignment as a primal earth character, or your primal alignment as an ex-praetorian character, you also receive the 7 day countdown for your alignment's alignment power. Hero and Villain receive 50 reward merits. Vigilante and Rogue receive 30 reward merits.

Scenario 3:
You used the alignment mission to confirm a confirmed alignment
(Hero+ -> Hero+; Vigilante+ -> Vigilante+; Villain+ -> Villain+; Rogue+ -> Rogue+)
Reward: Hero and Villain receive the appropriate Alignment Merit. Vigilantes and Rogues receive 60 reward merits

Note that if you cycle through alignments (eg, Hero->Vigilante->Villain->Rogue->Hero), when you return to an earlier part of the cycle your alignment will be considered unconfirmed. This means that your first time confirming this hero alignment again, you will receive 50 reward merits, rather than a Hero merit. Subsequent confirmations (without changing your alignment again) will then reward Hero merits.

Huh.

Not initially. If you start as a hero and do the 10 tips and a Hero morality mission, the FIRST time you get 50 Reward Merits. After that you get A-Merits.

If you don't start as a hero, you have to do the 10 tips and morality mission to become a hero and receive NOTHING (the alignment change is the reward). Then another set of 10 gets you the Reward Merits noted above.
