First off I would say, don't bother taking both auxiliary taunts. Just pick the AoE one ; they have the same duration, and while the ST one recharges faster, with a 10s base recharge Provoke will be up as often as you need it.
Another reason for that is as you lack aggro auras, you're going to want to alternate normal attacks (ideally, AoEs) and taunting to get the maximum taunting value. Also of note is attacking first tends to be more important than anything for tanking. If you're the first guy to establish threat, it's a lot easier to keep it than to wrestle it away from someone else.
A crab tends to softcap relatively easily, has comprehensive mez protection, decent resistances and good max HP. The obvious hole to fill is regeneration ; stack Rebirth (Destiny) on top of your defenses, resistances and maxHP and you end up with an insanely sturdy character. Vigor (Alpha) can take care of any endurance woes and buff Rebirth to even greater levels. Any Interface slot that does DoT that isn't psi or toxic should do the trick, for teamplay. Void (Judgement) gives you a significant damage debuff, and even when that's not useful it's still just as good as any other Judgement power. Lore is to taste, although if you'd want to improve your survivability/tankability I'd probably eye the phantom support tree.
This is, obviously, just one way to go at it rather than *the* one way. Just what I'd do myself in your situation.
OK, besides alot of AoE, are there any tricks to tanking as a Crab?
And I've heard people use the term permahasten and perma serum, how does that work?
Serum greatly increases your hit points and makes it less likely that you'll be one-shotted by an Arch Villain that makes it past your defenses. I hear about people building for "perma-Serum" but I've never actually seen anyone play that way... popping Serum as fast as it recharges. I perfer to just use it (and inspirations) wisely as needed.
I don't use Hasten at all. I have enough attacks to keep myself busy with 86% global recharge bonus (considerably faster than the old pre-IO "perma-Hasten"). If you do want perma-Hasten, the usual route is to take the Spiritual Alpha slot and go crazy with set bonuses and Luck of the Gambler. I suppose you could do it without Spiritual if you had enough purple sets.

My Crab's main spec is "tank-like" in that it is melee-focused and very durable but lacks pets. It does not have a taunt, but it does have the Leadership pool with Vengeance, which goes a long way towards keeping the team alive... except for that Blaster that I used for Vengeance.
However, I do have a secondary spec in which I try to have pets, and use taunt to keep them alive. It uses no purples but has capped positional defenses, 50% S/L resistance, and Provoke. The pets are not "permanent" and I tend to rotate through them rather than using all of them at once. The truly performance-oriented player could drop Recall Friend and take Hasten.
Unfortunately, this build is a few enhancement slots short of what I would consider optimal. Maybe when the technical issues are worked out and we get those extra three enhancement slots, a build like this will be ready for prime time.
All the enhancements in this build cap out at level 40 for exemplaring purposes, but most people would use 50 IOs for added performance.

So I've been playing around in Mids and finding my kinda style and what I found I like is to AoE alots. Get the big groups and just see the numbers, so here is my kinda ideal build.
Some was guess work, some of it was other builds. If I would change anything, I might swap the pets for hasten to perma hasten.
Any suggestions or people telling me I'm being stupid are welcome. Anything to help me learn.
Edit: Doh! Forgot to add, any suggestions for the alpha slot? I'm thinking spiritual or vigour. For lore, I'm going to take Cim for that extra bit of DPS. Destiny, rebirth with +max health, judgement vorpal or void, I'm just thinking the vorpal would be a good way to pull. And for my interface, either paralytic or diagmatic. But I'm looking for anyone who knows better.

You're a bit short of soft-cap for Melee/AoE. AoE isn't that important, but Melee is.
You also have no source of HP replacement in the build, which means Rebirth +Regen would be an optimal pick.
You could fill that defense gap with Barrier, but then you'd be giving up Rebirth as a source of hp replacement (healing and regen).
You might also fill that gap with Diamagnetic, allowing you to take Rebirth +Regen, but that would be sacrificing significant offense.
I see no reason for a generic healing in health when Stamina is underslotted. I'm sure I could find better uses for both of those slots. Regeneration is great, but if you run out of blue it's all over.
Impervium Armor may not be the best set for Fortification.
Oblits are great for recharge and defense bonus, but horrible for endurance unless you plan on going Cardiac (Agility or Vigor).
No Miracle Unique ?
LOTG D/DE/GR is good for defense, but terrible for endurance, unless you plan on Cardiac (Agility, or Vigor).
You'd be better served by Rebirth +Regen than Rebirth +Max HP.
I don't see anyway around Cardiac, unless you take one of the newer options like Agility or Vigor.
Agility looks to be an almost custom fit for a Crab that's a bit short on defense, the recharge will help too, where you don't have hasten. However, I don't think Agility will completly close the gap, but it may be close, at least half.
Vigor would boost Rebirth if you take that route, and help on endurance, but leave both Resist and Defense unaffected. But with Agility still likely leaving a defense gap, albeit a smaller defense gap, Vigor becomes a viable option.
Cardiac is more for the crab that has defense covered and then wants to add resist. Given that you have a defense gap, this would likely be my third choice.
Void -damage will likely serve you better than Vorpal. The Vorpal +defense is very short lived, while the Void -damage lingers for 30 seconds making it a viable longer term mitigation power.
Interface, whatever floats your boat. Reactive is the highest damage, but That Energy and Negative aren't that far behind from what I've been told and Toxic and Psy are 80% of the strength of the other three offensive procs, but can bypass select T9s, (this may or may not be correct). I would seldom choose the non-damage proc, I consider dead enemies to be the best mitigation, but then I have to live long enough to put them down too so defensive procs do sometimes have a use.
Lore, again, whatever floats your boat. Cimmies are the most ST damage, I feel like WW are the best overall mix of melee and ranged. CW stay at range and may be the best ranged only choice, but then I'm happy enough with Bots but they are definitely not top-tier. Carnies have an immobilize. Arachnos are good enough and fit the theme, I use them most of the time on my crab, unless I'm doing something stupid like soling the ITF, When I need every advantage I can scrape together, I use Cimmies. For BAF I tend to use the bots since they both have a cone. If I was going after a GM, I'd use the Cataphract for the massive -regen. If you're going after MoLam, Seers Psy damage may be the best choice, even though their damage is half that of the other choices, the Psy bypasses the T9. I'd also look at either the Psy Proc or Toxic Proc for the same reason for that task.

If you want a Crab that can "tank" you really need to soft-cap your positional defenses (45%). Right now you will take a lot of damage in melee that you don't have to. AoE is not as big an issue, but why take any extra damage if you can avoid it?
You can still squeeze a bit more defense out of Maneuvers (Pool) and Weave. And there is a lot of room for more and better IO set bonuses to positional defense.
For example, you have five slots in Fortification, but you are getting NO positional defense bonus out of it. If you just replaced the existing IOs with Aegis, you'd gain a very substantial 4.69% bonus to AoE Defense. Tough could give you the same bonus with a couple more slots.
Blood Mandate can give you loads of defense bonuses, but only if you slot your pets fully.
You could lose a few slots in other places to make this possible.
Serum is WAY over-slotted with recharge. That last recharge IO is only worth 3 seconds of recharge time. I don't feel this is a good investment.
Venom Grenade (and any power with all six Positron's Blast) is way over-slotted for damage. You could easily drop the Damage/Range IO and never notice any difference in damage.
Drop the extra slot you have added to Crab Spider Armor Upgrade. Plugging the holes in your positional defenses is more important that getting a trivial amount of psi resist.
Start saving your merits for a Steadfast Protection +3% Defense IO, and slot it in Crab Spider Armor Upgrade.
You have no knockback resistance. There are a variety of ways that can be done, but I think you'll regret not having it.
OK, did some moving around, full slotted blood mandate, took a maxed out AoE for melee defence. But I am still somewhat lacking, only about half way there.

Pretty sure provoke requires accuracy, you might want to squeeze some in there. Your global acc bonus will make the power useable, but you might struggle to hit bosses/+4s.
I am currently at 58% to hit. Do you think I will need more?
Also, done some reslotting, anyone else thing that 20% status protection deserves a slot?
As long as you have your IO set bonuses, your taunt with no accuracy slotted should still be fine. If you exemplar below that point, your taunt may become unreliable, especially against the most powerful targets. If you exemplar a lot, you may want to slot it with some accuracy.
IOs and set bonuses that grant % status resistance are pretty dubious, even for a squishy character that can get crowd controlled. All they do is deduct a fraction of the duration from how long you are held/slept/stunned etc. Crab Spiders are largely immune to crowd control anyway.
Having said that, I do have the Aegis Psionic/Status Resistance IO slotted in Fortification on my Crab Spider. I needed five slots of Aegis to get the AoE defense bonus and I felt that 3% psionic resistance was more useful than the End/Rech IO.

So one of the things I love the the multi arm look of the spiders. And in my head I can just imagine them making great tanks, using all those arms to block and what have you.
And I know that it would be hard to do, what with only having two taunts, both of them weak and to hit, but surely with the DPS it would be possible?
Basically, I'm asking if anyone knows how to turn a SoA into a tankish toon and what you would take up to incarnate for them?
