Hash FAILURE!

I'm almost certain this is going to be a MAC issue, and I believe I heard a similar case in another form - but it didn't completely apply to me as I had only just gotten the problem and also haven't uninstalled my game.

Upon opening City of Heroes Launcher I get the patch update download, but immediately upon being 'complete' the patch seems to fail and tells me
'Hash FAILURE!'
Downloaded patch does not match expected patch hash.

Lord knows what hash is. Anyway, I'm not sure if this is just because the servers aren't up yet, and work is still being worked on, or if I am going to need to do some manual labor on this thing.
I'm using a Mac OS X version 10.5.8

In attempting to do the 'repair' the launch suggests, I get the same problem.
Thank you in advance!

First off, just in case you have not heard, Apple has ceased support of OS X Leopard (a.k.a. 10.5), and thus City of Heroes and NCSoft can no longer offer support of their game on it. (They announced it here about a month and a half ago.) What this means is that while the game has continued to work on 10.5, and may continue to do so, the company can make no guarantees that it will continue to work, nor can they offer tech support for any errors Leopard users may encounter (such as this one). So while we here on the forums will do all that we can to help you out, there's no guarantee that a fix exists, and you may want to consider upgrading to Snow Leopard or Lion.

Now that that is out of the way...

This same error happened a little over a month ago to someone else. The problem was that they had anti-virus software engaged (specifically Norton) which was quarantining the file halfway through the download, which prevented the rest of the download from actually happening (despite what the status bar may have said). They fixed it by disengaging the anti-virus software and then downloading the patch.

So the question is: do you have anti-virus software active? If so, I would try disengaging it and then downloading the patch.

Well I'm not using Leopard - just Macbook Pro - unless I'm completely incoherent of what sort of programs my computer uses.

And no I'm not using Norton, which I did see was the issue for the previous patron. I'll probably call costumer support - and if not - I plan on getting a new laptop anyway.

"Mac OS X version 10.5.8" equals "Mac OS X Leopard." "Leopard" is just the marketing name for 10.5. Snow Leopard is 10.6, Lion is 10.7.

Depending on how old your Macbook Pro is, it may be perfectly capable of running Snow Leopard and Lion, and considering each of those only costs $30, it is a lot less expensive than buying a new computer. But if you planned on buying a new one anyway, then yes, you may as well upgrade.

Yeah, I'm trading out my Mac for something a bit more reasonable for gaming! And it appears that'll have to be the case if I want to get on City of Heroes again regardless (unless, of course, downloaded either or of Snow Leopard of Lion).

You should definitely be able to update to Snow Leopard (10.6) at least, and possibly Lion depending on your Macbook Pro's age.

As for the hash failure, occasionally there's a bad patch download, I'm not sure why. It even happens to me sometimes. I usually download the patch again, and it works. The only way you can cause a hash failure is if you're running out of disk space (so you can check that, on the off chance that it's possible).

If you're getting repeated hash failures, you may need to try to Repair, or if it gets really bad, uninstall and re-install CoH.

I had this issue as well and worked with Support to figure it out. I am on 10.7.2 and my issue turned out to be Norton messing with COH. Once I turned off Norton, did a full uninstall, and reinstall, it worked fine.
