Jacobs Ladder vs. Spring Attack

Hi Folks,
I just rolled an Electric/Shield scrapper. I was wondering which AoE attack would be more effective Jacobs Ladder or Spring Attack. I've never used Spring Attack so I was wondering how it would compare. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks.

Keep in mind that I know absolutely nothing about spring attack other than that its base recharge is 120 seconds. Jacob's ladder is not just better, it is a lot better. It's a very good cone that does pure energy damage, compared to an attack that I don't care how good it is, it doesn't fit in a chain so it isn't as good as jacob's ladder. The thing about JL is that it is a stand-in for a single target attack in elec melee, and it does a damn good impression. It really isn't skippable. If you skip something in elec, make it havoc punch which is simply worse than charged brawl.

PR hit it. JL is an integral attack for Elec Melee so that's really not a contest. Spring Attack ain't great. The recharge is very long and the damage is meh. However, being an already AoE heavy scrapper, and since LR and SA both have 90 second recharge, you can chain those two AoEs for some good overall damage.

Spring Attack actually has a 120s recharge, so it doesn't sync up nicely with Build Up/Lightning Rod (unless you deliberately underslot them for recharge, which would be silly).

Thanks folks. So it looks like grab J.L. and if there's room in the build maybe add Spring Attack. I appreciate the responses!

I took Spring Attack because I like having 3 teleport powers (4 after 21.5!)

Although I may end up going back to JL for DPS reasons.

Funny you said that Keplar because that was really precisely the thing that was attracting me to Spring Attack. I think I'll take it but it may be one of those things that will be later in the build. How do you like it?

I can't fit it, and JL in. It isn't bad, but being that it is on a different recharge than LR and SC, it is dicey. As mentioned above, for DPS, go JL, for cool-factor, go Spring Attack!

If I had room on a build for fun powers I'd take Spring Attack with decent recharge just to teleport out of stacked Caltrops in the Knives tip mission when running at higher settings. The damage is bonus.

I find the IO from the Christmas event (Winter's Gift Slow Resistance) works really well with those caltrops. Otherwise, that is a good point Moonlighter!

I use it mainly for crowd control. The KD mag is pretty nice. Haven't run any Knives missions yet, but escaping stacked caltrops was one of my first thoughts, too, when I saw the power.

For an Elec guy, JL is a must have. Get it as soon as you can.
