Build my PC for COH!

Last time I needed a new computer, I posted on the forums asking what people thought was the best value out there for a laptop that can play COH. I got great advice back then and I'm hoping to do so again.

So I'm looking to get a new computer as my current one has just been bugy. COH is pretty much the most demanding thing I use my computer for. Although I do use it for other entertainment things like music, DVDs and Netflix - each of these less demanding than COH.

So, if you had to build a new PC that was primarily for COH (with ultra mode), which laptop would you get?

Just FYI: for COH ultra mode:

Windows 7
Intel or AMD Dual core processor or higher
4GB Ram+
NVIDIA GeForce *+ or ATI Radion HD 2000+

Any suggestions?

I can't speak for every possible build, but I can tell you that I visited tech part of these forums quite often with my old system.

The one I'm on now no longer requires me to do so. I've had 2 disconnections in three weeks; both the result of my ISP and not CoH. I had one game crash upon entering my sg base - but again, this turned out to be packet loss on the way to CoH. (my ISP again!)

I think if you can find a core i5 (what I have) you'll be able to experience all the wonders of shadows, and ultra mode without lag, even during MSRs and the like. I have 8 gigs of RAM, so that could also be helping me. (it surely isn't hurting)
Take a good peek at what Father X-Mas writes - the man knows his stuff. Find the lap top equivalent of his desktop specs and you'll be happy.

What kind of budget do you have?

Okay,

Head over here:

Then post the results in a new thread in the Gameplay/Technical Issues & Bugs forum.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Rajani, budget isn't really too much of an issue. I basically go conservative as possible. However, if there was an upgrade to the next best item that was well worth the money, I'd take it.

Hyperstrike, thanks for the link. I'll give it a try shortly.

Okay.

Take a look at Father Xmas's signature - he puts together a list of parts that make decent rigs - I am using a modified version of one of his for my current computer and it runs great.

Just for the record? I wouldn't. I'd get a proper box. Laptops, to me, are self destructing heat boxes of dustbunnies waiting to explode when Co* is put on them.

But that's just me.

Think of the best box you can build for your needs... then put those items, as closely as possible, in a laptop.

There. You can find your own that way.

But, if I were to HAVE to buy a laptop, I'd buy Lenovos first, if I could get one to fit the bill. Then I'd trickle my way down... Probably Dell... maybe a Toshiba... Perhaps a Compaq/HP... leaving Acers and Sonys last, and in my opinion, unbuyable. Acer because... they just aren't very good, in my opinon, based on previous experiences, and Sonys because, frankly, their support is the Devil incarnate.

I couldn't return a laptop to them for a *safety issue*. 6 months I tried. It was stupid. I threw the thing away rather than have the battery melt in my lap. Forget you, Sony. And that's not the first, but it was the last, Sony thing that service was awful on.

Anyway... Good luck.

I have one machine with NVidia and another with ATI and both work fine except that I have to use an older driver for the ATI. I'm currently still using 11.3 because everything else causes the game to randomly GPF.

I'm using a relatively cheap GTX460 on the other machine, I get acceptable performance (although it's a 1680x1050 monitor ).

my only other suggestion is a raid-0 for your system disk but that's optional.
