CoH Stuck at "Loading" stripe.

Hi, I used to play CoH years ago and have recently wanted to come back. I downloaded the client and CoH. When I run CoH as "administrator" The blue stripe that says "loading" appears and just stays there and nothing happens no matter how long I wait. I have two graphics cards installed. I have a Nvidia 335m GT, and a standard intelchipset for when I am not gaming. I used to be able to get the game to run with the intel chipset but that is no longer possible (it could only run in safe mode anyway because it isnt meant for games). My Nvidia card doesn't load it at all. Any help is greatly appreciated!

System specs:
Alienware m11x
CPU: Intel i7 processor at 1.3ghz with turbo boost.
GPU: Nvidia 335m GT(I have tried numerous drivers with this card from 280.26 to 275.66, so I don't think it's a driver issue although it may be)/Intel chipset
OS: Windows 7 64-bit
60gb of 250gb used

Here's the Coh Helper stuff:

All of my suggestions are being pulled pulled from this thread.

  • Make sure there isn't a instance of the launcher already running (In the Task Manager make sure there isn't a copy of NCSoftLauncher in the Applications tab, or NCLauncher in the processes tab).
  • If your Launcher is set to automatically start up with Windows, try unchecking that option. (File > Settings and uncheck "Automatically run the Launcher at Windows startup.")
  • Set your launcher to close after launching the game (File > Settings > In the drop down under "After launching a game" select "exit launcher."
  • Delete the "addcache.xml" file in your CoH directory.
  • The most likely solution: "I would like to have the graphic shader files rebuilt on your system. To do so, please delete the "CoX" folder located, by default, at "C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Local\NCSoft" and try launching City of Heroes again. If you are unable to see this folder, you may have "Show hidden files and folders" disabled." (Sent to the poster having trouble in that thread from support.)

Any one of those has helped others that have had trouble with the launcher stopping at the "Loading" bar.

Please post a HiJackThis log so that we can see what else is running on the system.

This sounds very much like a software conflict with another program such as Window Blinds or a similar program from Stardock software. A HiJackThis log will show us what the conflicting program is if that is the issue.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Thanks a bunch @Morgan Reed
It was the "CoX" file I needed to delete, not sure why, but hey it worked!

Glad you found the problem and fixed it.

I have the same problem, it either sticks at the loading stripe but more often than not the loading strip disappears and the game doesn't load.

I have tried all the suggestions on this page but still have the issue although it always loads from safe mode.

My Nvidia drivers are up to date.

Sorry to repeat what has been already suggested, but you tried to 1) tick on "Show hidden files" under Folder settings in the options menu in Windows Explorer, then 2) deleting the "CoX" folder in "C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Local\NCSoft"?

@MorganReed, nice compilation you got there ;-P

You did? I don't see a HiJackThis log anywhere.

If none of the "common solutions" have cured your problems, I would suggest posting your Hijack This logs. Also, your CoH Helper results would be good too, since the odds of you running the same system as Stonewall Jackson are slim

In the meantime, some things you can try:
  • If you are the kind of person that does not shut down their computer every night (no judgements, there are pros and cons either way), you might try a cold boot. Shutdown your computer. After it has completely powered down, give it a good 10 seconds (at least) and power it back up.
  • If you are running any anti-virus/anti-malware programs, you can try updating them and scanning your computer.
  • If you aren't running any anti-virus/anti-malware programs, I would highly recommend you do so. Even if you don't use their "live" or "active" settings, just having them to run every once in a while is a good thing.

The video driver installation appears to be corrupted (the funky date being shown only for the video driver). From what I can see from searching that Driver Version, it looks to be a really really old driver from 2008. That driver won't handle the OpenGL calls correctly. Looking at the nVidia site, that may be the most current driver for that video card which means there is little you can do with it other than try to get a clean installation of the drivers rather than the corrupted install showing here.

Follow these steps to do a clean install of the drivers.

  1. Download the 175.19 drivers from the nVidia site but don't install them.
  2. Download and install Driver Sweeper but don't run it yet.
  3. From the Control Panel go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any nVidia Display Drivers or nVidia Display entries found there. Don't reboot if it asks to. Don't remove any nVidia motherboard or sound entries.
  4. From the Control Panel go to System and click on the Hardware tab. Click the Device Manager button. Click the +next to Display adapters. Right-click on the nVidia entry there and select Uninstall.
  5. Reboot the computer and press F8 rapidly to get the menu. Choose Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking.
  6. Cancel any New Hardware wizards that come up.
  7. Launch Driver Sweeper and select the nVidia Display or nVidia video options only. Click Clean. Reboot when it asks if you want to reboot.
  8. Let Windows load normally but cancel any New Hardware wizards.
  9. Install the drivers you downloaded previously, reboot when prompted.
  10. To check to see if the installation is corrupt, run CoH Helper again and paste the results into Notepad, WordPad, Word or whatever text editor you have. If the date on the video driver looks normal, the installation is not corrupted. If it is still showing that strange date, something on your computer may be keeping it from installing cleanly. That could be anything from the Anti-Virus or Anti-Spyware software that is installed, the Soluto software, a virus or malware that hasn't been detected and removed or something else. In most cases, the installation will not be corrupted if you follow these steps.
Unfortunately, that's the newest driver for that card so it may do little for you. At that point, you might want to look at investing in a newer video card although that may also require upgrading your power supply.

Along with the video driver issues, something is apparently blocking CoH Helper from accessing the registry entries. There should be quite a bit of game settings information below where your report stops. I don't know if it's the anti-spyware program, the anti-virus program or something else such as Soluto (you are now the second person I've seen with that program installed). It could also be what caused the corrupt video driver installation.

As a final note, you are also extremely low on space on both drives. You may want to try to free up some space on the C: drive so that it is above 20% Free space (above 25% would be better). It appears that the D: drive may be a recovery partition put there by HP, if so, don't mess with it.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

I don't know if this will help, but I had this same problem for several months earlier this year. I went through all kinds of things with tech support, before they finally sent me this:

If you find a "CoX" folder, delete it and try running the game again.
Once I did that, I was able to run the game again. Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that can cause this problem (because I tried lots of things to fix it) so this probably won't work. But it is an option.

Something is still blocking CoH Helper from accessing the settings in the registry.

Also, the video driver installation is still corrupted. It should be showing in the same date format as your sound card driver does in the CoH Helper report.

Whatever is causing the driver to not install correctly is possibly also blocking CoH Helper from getting the rest of the information from the Registry. It could also be causing the problems you are having getting the game to launch.

I haven't tried running CoH on that old of a card for quite a while, well before the graphics engine updates that came with Issue 17. I'll see if I have a computer here at work to test it on to see what it does and report back.

In the meantime, you'll need to figure out what is causing the driver installation issues, what is blocking CoH Helper from reading the Registry settings for the game and get those corrected.

After trying again last night it now seems to be working, hopefully it'll stay that way.

I'll try and get to the bottom of what's blocking CoH helper.

Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated
