Grav/Cold... I find nothing here...

My Search-Fu isn't the strongest, but I could only find one thread that said they didn't care what anyone said, they liked their Grav/Cold controller.

Okay... Well, here's the thing. I am a melee guy. Have been since issue 1. I have a few support characters at 50, but a vast majority are tanks/brutes/scrappers/widows/banes.

I have an earth/earth dom at 44 and a elec/elec dom at 41, but they aren't controllers, and as doms go, they are rather scrappy.

So, I had a really cool concept for a controller, but as I've never played one before, I thought I'd just make one and wait for the new Mids to come out to craft it.

I hate waiting...

I was hoping for some build advice or, well, something telling me that grav/cold is lame or just to forget it...

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Gravity is kinda the redheaded step-child of controller sets. It has it's charms, but even the people who like it a lot will have to admit it's not the strongest set around. Aside from the basic single target/multitarget hold/immob that most sets have, all it has going for it is wormhole, which is a cool trick but not gamebreaker, and an above average pet. Sure it's damage is decent, but illusion and fire both also have high damage without sacrificing control for it.

Gravity/Cold doesn't have any particularly strong synergy, which means there isn't a great deal of demand for guides. Gravity works best when paired with secondaries that provide some good control(like trick arrow), and cold has a little bit of soft control, but not enough to make it a high in demand combo.

What I'd do is look for guides on cold domination and read up on that. Gravity is an easy set and aside from Wormhole the guides pretty much write themselves.

I don't like Gravity much but Cold does work well with it considering the fairly big control hole. There are builds that could potentially make your pet nearly unkillable in normal combat.

The cold buffs for the Singularity was sort of what I was going for... However, getting to lvl 32-35-38 for all these neato tricks...

The grav/cold dom I made at the same time for the giggles is an easier one to play, but then again, cold assault plays as a scrapper set...

If you're looking for pets to buff, fire, and to a lesser extend, electric might be a better path. Signularity is already pretty tough, and doesn't need buffs to tank, but imps and gremlins get scary with some shields on them.

Grav is weak in the sense that it has roughly the same control power as Fire but without any of the damage. It also suffers from some unreasonably long animations. You will really feel the lack of control ability; Controller mezzing power is peanuts next to that of permadom Dominators.

Cold is a top-tier lategame secondary but doesn't offer a lot of mitigation (especially early on, before you get sleet for KD). The main mitigation is -Rech which I found to be hard to depend on.

Altogether you're in for a harsh first few levels. That said, whether or not the character will be strong enough to be playable is pretty subjective. So give the character a try and, if you don't find it worthwhile, it can always be deleted.

Grav makes Cold as bad as it can be but Cold will always be awesome!

I tried several times to find a Gravity controller I could play past the low levels. I finally found one in Grav/Storm mostly because of the synergy with Freezing Rain. Gravity's AoE Immob does not have -knockback (similar to Electric). As a result, Crushing Field+Freezing Rain became an immobile knockdown field. That was enough to get me to 26 and 32. Hurricane was also a HUGE help, letting me debuff the ToHit on a group of foes while I use Grav Dist-Crush-Propel to take down foes one at a time. Once I got Singy to tank for me, Singy and I could play foe-pinball with his repel and my Hurricane. I was able to mostly solo my Grav/Storm up to 50.

Sadly, Cold doesn't get its version of Freezing Rain (Sleet) until level 35. The other powers are great for many control sets, but really don't add all that much to Gravity. Crushing Field+the -Recharge in Show Storm would help reduce attacks on you, but other than that, you don't have much. If you choose to stick with it, you will probably do best to try to stay on teams. In Grav, skip Dimension Shift (I hate intangible powers). Propel is good for solo, but on teams Propel is so slow that you often end up hitting things that have just been killed by a teammate. (I call this "necroblasting.") Crush actually does more damage than Lift, so I would suggest taking GD, Crush and either Lift or Propel. Crushing Field is the AoE Immob, and GDF is the AoE hold. Wormhole is a fun but situational power (when it should be an "every group" type power). Singularity makes a HUGE difference in the character -- slot Singy with the Resist procs to make him even tougher.
