I'm posting now rather than after I'm done to give some good and some bad news...

I read 3 titles so far

Resurrection Man #1 = Go buy it. It's well done 10/10

Demon Knights #1 = It's meh all the way around but it hopefully will get better once this dumb writer is off the book 5/5

And now for the good and bad news...
Mister Terrific #1 = It is one of the worst pieces of crap comics I've read. Karen Star aka Power Girl is in it.

Good to hear you found a book that you really liked.

I enjoyed Green Lantern and Red Lanterns, which felt like there was no 'relaunch' at all. Of course that means that these books will probably not draw in readers that have not enjoyed the GL storylines over the past few years.

EDIT: The only two books that sold out in my area yesterday were Batman & Robin, and Superboy. The second one really puzzled me...

Green Lantern wasn't relaunched beyond the new #1s and the new series (New Guardians, Red Lanterns). Storywise they're just picking up where they left off. DC didn't want to fix what wasn't broken, and GL, comic-wise, isn't broken.

There is some confusion, as the relaunch happens to coincide with Sinestro re-entering the Green Lantern Corps. Some people seem to think that's a reboot, but this is a continuation of the storyline that has been happening all along.

I though Green Lantern #1 was as great as the previous volume had been. Seeing both Sinestro and Hal Jordan adjust to roles they don't want to be in and are really ill equipped to deal with makes for great storytelling. I'm kinda hoping this situation lasts a little longer than it seems it will.

Red Lanterns #1, I thought, got bogged down a little in exposition, but that's understandable given that these characters have never had their own series before. It was cool to get inside Atrocitus' head a bit, even in spite of one...politically controversial panel. It also set up the conflict that will drive the series in the early going, which looks at least interesting enough to entice me into buying issue #2.

I've been writing reviews of all the new 52 on comicvine as I read them... here are my thoughts on GL and RL

Green Lantern. 6/10

Title: Meh Lantern

This book does a decent job of reintroducing the characters and setting up where they've been and where they are going. It does however have several problems with it's story.

#1. Hal Jordan has apparently been AWOL from the Air Force for months now... which makes no sense given that he's been the GL for years and if the GL story is pretty much the same he was no longer with the Air Force as of 5+ years ago.

#2. The Guardians are making incomprehensible movements, from letting Sinestro go to what they say to Ganthet to what they are doing to Ganthet. They make it clear in War of the Green Lanterns that they don't like Sinestro being a GL and they intend to execute him yet they let him go... and return to a sector that is already being watched over.

#3. We don't get a recap of what happened in War of the Green Lanterns but we start right after it occurred... meaning that new readers have to go pick that up to know what's happening here, which DCnU is supposed to prevent. This lack of recap leaves us with a Hal Jordan that has been mysteriously kicked out of the GLC, returned to Earth penniless, and we're left with Hal looking like a villain according to the Guardians' dialogue.

The art is decent enough save for the one page panel that has Sinestro putting his hand in his armpit, but other than that its the quality of art you expect.

My recommendations...

Is this a pass? No. It's a deent book. If you like GL it's a continuation and some of the elements of the backstory are funky but they likely won't matter over all so whatever.

Should a new reader pick this up? It does an ok job at getting a reader up to date, but really, the fact is GL has more or less not changed, they expect you to have been following along with this title from before, and the stories from the GL and GLC titles are still in continuity so I'd suggest going back and reading "Death of Superman" followed by "Reign of the Supermen" followed by the issues of GL that happen around that period. Read "Zero Hour", skim "Final Night", Read "GL: Rebirth", and then read volume 4 of GL and volume 2 of GLC (the latest volumes) that will get you completely caught up to where this book is going and they are all pretty good reads (save for Final Night).
Red Lanterns 8/10

Title: Lamentations of an Despot

This issue is a good intro to Atrocitus more so than the Red Lanterns. You get a little back story about the Red Lanterns, but it is really muted and lost in the mix. If i had no idea who the Red Lanterns were, what their powers were, or anything about the Emotional Spectrum or the DCU I'd have just about as little clue as I did before.

the book is written from the point of view of Atrocitus and the writing harkens back to the monologues issues of galactic despots such as Darkseid and Mongul. It's really a great read in that sense and anyone that likes those styles of books will surely like this book.

I like where I see that the story is going, BUT I also think that some of the things, namely the story event on Earth, could have waited till the next issue it detracts from the overall flow of the book in this issue. It's a rushed element, but it doesn't do too much harm.

If you skip this book you'll miss like 2 pages that set up an origin of a future character, but other than that you won't be missing any story elements. However this is also worth the money and a good stand alone issue. If you are looking for something to pick it up, this is a good one for the money and even though it really doesn't contribute to the overall story of the world it is a well done character piece.
