Forum converted to free verse
From what I can see, this appears to be a way for Free and Premium players to be able to post in certain parts of the forums, such as the Gameplay / Technical Issues and Bugs forums.
I think Free Verse is an add-on for vBulletin to allow posting by non-members in specific forum sections or to allow posting by restricted members in specific forum sections.
In this case, I'd guess restricted members with Free and Premium accounts being those restricted cases.
EDIT: In my case, I see it as follows:
City of Heroes > English > Development >
Gameplay / Technical Issues & Bugs
Forum converted to Free Verse
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
Black Pebble is my new hero.
My breadcrumbs looks like this:
City of Heroes Forums >
English > Development
> Gameplay/Technical
Issues & Bugs
Forum converted
to free verse
And if I could borrow this thread, the whole upper portion of the forums should be redesigned a bit. At 1680 x 1050 (recommended for my monitor) and the browser window just wide enough to get all of the forum links on one bar ("Official Site," to "Log Out") half of the browser window is taken up with the forum logo, the forum links, the top bar (breadcrumbs to PM window), and the forum description.
That is a little much. I feel sorry for anyone who can't run at a higher resolution than me.
"free verse" was my way of describing the gratuitously many line breaks in the breadcrumb thing caused by having the VIP message (which can't be linebroken and is always two lines at full width, so far as I can tell) shoving it out to the side.
If it were up to me, I'd do:
[ Breadcrumbs ] [ User Box ]
[ VIP Message Goes Here ]
so it was less cluttered.
We'd still have some of the problems Morgan described if we did it that way seebs in that it would take up even more of the screen real estate at the top of the page.
As for the use of the term Free Verse, I thought at first it was the name of the add-in and didn't realize you were just calling it that as a descriptor.
I still think it has to do with the changes they are making to try to allow limited forum access to particular forum sections such as this one.

Want to take even less space, grab Adblock and block the logo up top. (Really, that thing should be smaller.)
Breadcrumbs: City of Heroes Forums > English > Development > Gameplay / Technical Issues & Bugs

So, yeah, as far as the OP, I wouldn't argue with cutting out that WHOLE middle section, quite honestly.
It wasn't so much of a question of what I could do in my situation to improve the forum page, but more a report of how bad it was under those conditions.
My poor netbook with 800 x 600 is going to cry if I ever log on with it...
The VIP Subscriber message should be below the forum breadcrumbs and account info. As is, it makes the breadcrumbs really narrow, yielding:
city of heroes forums > english >
development > gameplay /
technical issues & bugs
post new thread
which honestly looks more like bad poetry than like a useful navigation tool.
