Log-In Issues
I am having this exact same issue. It started yesterday (Sept 1), and I didn't realize it was a problem then. I just thought the game was down. The NCSoft launcher runs with no problem, the game loads to the login screen. When I try to log in, it hangs as if the connection it bad, for about 20 seconds, and then tells me that the game client cannot connect to the login server.
My other computer can log in just fine.
This started happening to me every time I would crash during iTrials (I hardly ever crash mind you) on Thursday and again for the first login attempt on Friday. The only way I have been able to fix the issue and actually login has been to run a repair (consistency check) on my live client through the NCsoft launcher.

Reinstall, I wonder if you have the same issue that I did/do.

I did the repair, and that didn't end up helping me. I also made sure CoH was let through my firewall, and just to be sure I turned my firewall off and tried logging in. I also tried in safe mode. Nothing. I haven't tried a reinstall...
Glad you were able to get it fixed. For now I will be sticking with my workaround. I have no desire, nor should I have to actually reinstall CoH.

No workarounds for me either, although I am back in the game after a full reinstall. Not to mention, because of a series of errors where the installer either wouldn't delete or create folders on my computer (I had to manually create a City of Heroes folder, for instance), I got to download the entire game twice when the first download went *poof* and vanished. The uninstaller, similarly, let me down big time. So no game Thursday, no game Friday, and 1/3 of my three day weekend ate up by whatever error(s) this happened to be. And I did in fact, keep a copy of the pigg files and put them in the CoH folder so that the download wouldn't be so huge. The downloader ignored them, as far as I can tell.

Also, when everything was done being installed, the Launcher kept reporting an Error and looping back through the fix/repair sequence... prolly did it like 4 or 5 times. Finally, I exited the Launcher, restarted it, and everything went fine that time. Game is fixed!
Going to PM this thread to a Dev so they know about the issue... who is on top of these things, programming-wise? Used to be Ghost Falcon and/or Television...
Ssssoooo... it just happened to me. Closing the game and restarting didn't fix it. Closing the game and repairing and restarting didn't fix it. Closing the game and restarting fixed it.
??? ??? ??? ???
I have no idea. Honestly. No idea.

Hey Thirty-Seven - is there *any* chance that when you did a reinstall you kept the old install? (or anyone else who had this problem). I have been doing some research and found what I believe to be the specific problem and it's in a simple file that could be opened even in notepad. I'd *love* to get someone else to verify what I'm seeing here.
Damn, wish I had... once I got the new install to work, I dumped the old Folder... what file are you looking for, it may still be chilling in the Recycle Bin.
And, I did send that PM to Television and Ghost Falcon... though I have no idea what if anything they did, or if those folks are even doing anything with coding or what have you.
{BTW, I re-subscribed to this thread so that I will see any new info that comes up.}
Ooh the recycle bin, sometime saviour of many! If it were in there, that might be great!
The file is addcache.xml. It's quite a small file and something that should open in a browser or in any sort of text editing program. It's should have been in the top level of the CoH directory.
There's an IP address used in there, it's repeated several times. This is what differs between my old client which no longer works (can't get past login screen at all) and my new install which works just fine.
I'm very curious whether the IP address used is 64.25.36.4 or if it's 64.25.36.88.
Thanks very much for coming back and having a gander! Would be great if someone was looking at this thread, my back and forward with Support isn't going so well
I will take a look for that file and return my findings here.
The file was in my Recycle Bin... and it had this in the 'addcache.xml' file: 64.25.36.4
My Live, and working version, had the .88 version.
NOW, the trick is to get someone actively having this problem to change that file... and see what results with log-in issues.

If not, see if you can't change the IP Address in the addcache.xml file from one ending in .4 to one ending in .88, with luck, that will fix it and save a re-install.

*swirls chair to other computer*
First I'm just going to make a quick copy of the entire CoH directory. I want to make sure I have any and all broken files saved so that when someone actually takes a look at this I can check anything they might need.
Okay I'll fire up the Luncher as normal and try and get into CoH. Launcher up just fine - CoH ready to go and so it automatically loads up. I'm at the signin screen. Enter password, click Log In (don't hold breath). Wait wait wait - standard login server/firewall message.
Click ok, click exit. Navigate to my CoH install. Untick 'Read Only' on addcache.xml and then I'm editing it (in notepad). Change the ip address at every point in the file from .4 to .88 - Save.
Fire up the same shortcut. Launcher up just fine, again CoH recognised as fully up to date. Get the login screen - type in password and click Log In.
Bingo. Eula - Accept - Union - First toon on list - Enter Paragon and there I load straight into PD. Have friends, loaded into chans and whereami has me in Union PD just fine.

The thing that really really annoys me about this; last Friday at 18.45 BST I sent a followup email to support about not being able to login. That was my first mention of 64.25.36.4. Here we are, days later, I've had unhelpful responses from Support but thanks to a bit of elbow grease and help on the forums, the actual problem has been found (not what caused it tho) and a solution has been found.
I really look forward to the service I'll get with VIP Customer support. Will they be as unhelpful? I'm going to page Z to this thread too as with some actual confirmation it's not just me, this needs to get pushed up. If at least 2 on the forums can confirm this is the issue it has to be affecting more people *and* how can we have any faith that the Launcher is going to keep people up to date - perhaps even more importantly how long did it let us in and onto the servers with an incorrect game client?
I've been having troubles logging in since I posted. The only way for me to get in was to reinstall the Launcher.
I looked and had .4 in my addcache.xml and changed it to .88 and got in fine. Changed it back to .4 and couldn't get in again. Back to .88 and got in fine.
Culprit!

Thanks for checking Aggelakis. Glad (well you know what I mean) to see someone else able to back up what I've been saying. I did ping it to Z and he's got back to me and posted in t'other thread so fingers crossed we'll get some more info soon.
DJB--do you have Peerblock or some other form of port blocking program running? I use it for ad blocking and just found out it's blocking access to the updater (I have no idea for how long, I just started using the program last week)
I use 2 computers and the main one had the .88 IP. The little one (which hasn't been updated in weeks) still had the .4 so I ran the updater. I notice Peerblock is blocking the connection so I disable it and restart. This time the launcher works, updates the files, characters load, all is well. addcache now says .88
This doesn't explain why the launcher said you were up to date but I figure every little bit of info helps.
Gol-
I have it installed on one machine yes but it's not running (not even in the background). It's not on t'other machine. It's interesting tho that you can see the launcher update from .4 to .88 as I still can't get that to happen - I tried just a couple of hours ago.
Hopefully Z and co are all over this cause Support certainly are not;

Hey folks, after the recent epic downtime, I have been left unable to log into the Live servers at all on my normal computer. I am able to log in on an alternate computer, and am able to access the Beta Servers on my normal computer with no problems.
Any ideas of what could be the issue? I would like to think I have messed with all the obvious things, yet can not figure out ANYTHING to get me beyond the Login and Password screen... I can't even get to the EULA screen.
