What happens in Freedom to character names?
1. I would guess they are safe if they meet the current requirements to keep them safe. Level 6 or whatever.
2. No, the name handle system is not changing
total kick to the gut

This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.

It's not when a certain amount of time passes, and it is not an automatic thing. Names are only lost when the devs specifically run a name freeing script, and you only lose a name if it is one of those affected and someone else wants it. If your name was affected and no one wanted it before you reactivated your account it won't be wiped.

To my knowledge the devs have only run the name script twice. Once a few years ago, when they discovered that the overwhelming majority of names freed were below level 6, and again a while later, when they only ran it below level 6 because of what they discovered with the first one. Any character on an inactive account above a certain level is safe.

They probably won't add the @Global Name visibly even if they did allow anyone to have the names. That could potentially lead to some malevolent griefing. If someone wants to give another player a bad name, all they'd have to do is create a character with the same name as one the target is known to pay and start harassing people. Since not everyone checks global names in those cases, it could result in the targeted person getting a bad rap and possibly getting ostracized on a given server. I know some obnoxious forum posters are convinced that several of the servers are dead, but they only have that impression because they've pissed a lot of people of on that server and no one is willing to team with them. Non-unique names would give griefers the ability to make that happen to people who did nothing wrong.

I respectfully disagree on that. I think those servers can be great for soloing. Just set your flag to red "Not accepting invites" and play. If the occasional tell bothers you then just delete tells from your chatbox. If you like chatting with friend online while you solo you can still keep in touch via global channels.
I've been wondering for some time what happens when your account becomes the Premium account should you choose to play for free after freedom launches. I have 2 questions.
Do the characters that get greyed out have the possibility of someone taking their name? As is the way when you cancel your account now and a certain amount of time passes. Or are all your character names safe and secure as long as you log in every so often?
Are they going to allow anyone to have any name they wish by adding the feared @username to the end of every character thus freeing up many names for all the new players joining the game with freedom? Or are all the new players going to have to take names that are more creative. While I like thinking up creative names, I think thats not a very good draw to force (sometimes uncreative) new players to think up names. They may just want to try the game so they can finally make the hero they've always wanted that they always wanted to be named "such and such" and "such and such" is already taken. We may see people walk into the game and before giving it a chance walk right back out. Long shot, but whats the plan with this sort of behavior. Don't get me wrong I would love to name my characters whatever I always wanted to. But I know a lot of people don't think that anyone should be the hero they've always wanted to be in name only. Even if those characters are totally different in actions and looks.
