If you HAD to have in-game ads...

... then this would've been the way to do it.

Temporary Power: Refreshment (click; team buff)

When this Power is activated, the character and any teammates are Refreshed, recovering 67% of their Hit Points and Endurance. Dead teammates are unaffected. Recharge: Long.
The visual effect would be the character owning the power saying (in Local chat), "Hey, Kool-Aid!" The Kool-Aid Man would then burst through the nearest wall with his trademark battle cry (OH YEAAAAAAHHH) and Refresh the character and his teammates. Of course that doesn't make sense for robots, the undead, hyperintelligent shades of the color blue, etc., but roll with it, it's the Kool-Aid Man.

I for one would find that WAY MORE immersion-breaking than running across the occasional real world ad on a billboard.

Well, for some people, it'd be strange and really unusual. For others, it'd be a Tuesday.

I agree. However, I would find it acceptable and still immersive if the kool-aid were offered by a kid with a lemonade stand, an apartment tenant either hanging out on the fire escape or sunning herself on the roof, a vending machine, or Mr. Yin passing out free samples at his store.

For that matter, if passing citizens can tell you the time, why not have them chatter about their favorite products?

I, for one, wouldn't mind seeing billboards here and there in game for real life products/companies.

The ebil thing that lives inside my brain would love to see the DulcoEase advert playing on a giant billboard (the actual UK/EU (I'm guessing it's EU too) in Steel Canyon a la Piccadilly Circus / Times Square.

If the ad also exists in Teh Americaz then I apologise but every time I see it, I can't help but go slack-jawed and then laugh like a little schoolboy afterwards.

I also won't disturb you all by finding it and linking it (highly unlikely that would be 'cool' anyway) but I will give a brief overview:

Two ladies, enjoying a lunch at a classy brasserie, are joined by a third companion.

Lady 1: Hi Diana, how are you?
Lady 2: Well Sue, my poo's a bit hard.*

(absolutely no reaction to this from either Lady 1 or the ever-silent Lady 3)

Lady 1: You should try this...
(close up of a well-manicured hand with DulcoEase)

Lady 2: Thanks! I will!

Voiceover Lady (possibly Lady 3, but we never see) then explains the 'Science-y bit' prevalent in today's adverts.

(then, without any pill-popping or 'application' the ladies continue their lunch, laughing and chatting).

I kid you not, this is a genuine advert.

*I've obviously paraphrased this bit to make it funnier (in my head, anyway)

Man, people around here just don't have a sense of humor any more.
