How to select start location?

Hi there. Total CoH noob. I started a trial account last night, picked a server, made a toon, and it started me automatically in Praetoria.

How do you select where you start at? Is it a server thing?

Thanks.

There's that thing that pops up at the very beginning of character creation that asks if you want to make a hero, Praetorian, or villain. Heroes start in Paragon City, villains start in the Rogue Isles, Praetorians start in Praetoria. Heroes and villains don't have access to all the archetypes, though, so if for instance you wanted a Mastermind, you're going to have to be a Praetorian or a villain. So far. I hear rumors they're thinking about changing that in some future update. Maybe when the games goes to freemium, I dunno. I've only sort of been half paying attention to that hype.

It's a new player thing, you have to start your first character in Praetoria. If you start a new character you will be given the option to start in Paragon City (Hero ATs only), The Rogue Isles (Villain ATs Only) or Praetoria.

I see, no wonder I didn' see the option anywhere. Cool, thanks!!

Oh! And there's that. I didn't know about that. Kind of lame, actually.

I guess it's basically the designers saying, "Hello, new player! Nonononono, don't start over there, the textures there are seven years old. Start here. It's shiny!"

And since, in the next update, the other side is getting a big fat upgrade--invariably it will go the other way: you'll be expected to start in the Galaxy's Last Stand tutorial, instead of Praetoria.

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

Yes the new Galaxy tutorial will allow you to take heroes red side and vice versa.

I did have a snarky comment here about the developers being very explicit that all knew players would need to start in Praetoria as the developers wanted to put their best foot forward.

However, I can't actually find any forum posts from 2010 where this was spelled out... nor anything on the main site where this was spelled out. It's not even spelled out clearly on the available trial web-page, nor was I able to find a link on Paragon Wiki explaining the lockout.

So no, I guess I can't fault new players for not knowing about the requirement that their first avatar has to be a Praetorian.

With the next major update, it seems like there really won't be any such thing as basic "Hero Archetypes" or "Villain Archetypes" anymore, there'll just be ten "Basic" archetypes, any of which can start as a hero or villain. It'll probably only be the four Epic ATs who will have to start on the "proper" side (and even they'll be able to switch sides after they hit level 20).

Right now, Pretoria is much nicer-looking and has a more interesting branching storyline than the other two areas, but its enemies are generally tougher (without actually giving you any more experience). Villain-side has an ugly starting area which is difficult to get around without a travel power, and only two possible starting story contacts, but has some fairly interesting story arcs that are very different for each set of contacts. Hero-side has a choice of two starting areas (both very clean-looking, but with older graphics), with five possible contacts in each (depending on your character's Origin), but the mission arcs (questlines) they send you on are on the dull side and all rather similar (not to mention often indirect).

With the next update (not expected for another month or two), however, the Hero and Villain parts of that paragraph will no longer be true.

Player of a first-wave Taxibot,
As a patron of the original taxibots, thank you.

Yep! I thought it was a silly thing for them to do and fortunately it is going away in a few months!
Basically, they wanted to show off the new Praetoria zones and tutorial and have that be the introduction for new players, but I always felt that was a big mistake. City Of Heroe's greatest strength is its large amounts of personal choices to make and enjoy the game the way you want to!
I blame marketing, but, fortunately, new players will be able to start wherever they want again, once the next free issue comes along in a little bit!

Best of luck and feel free to ask any questions that come up!

Or, if you're being less diplomatic: the old-school hero contacts spend a lot of time just wasting your damn time. :)

"Go and see the security chief for Perez Park."

"Go speak to the War Zone Coordinator for Siren's Call."

"Hey, have you heard about the Hollows? Yeah, well, you will."

"Run to the far side of Brickstown and back for no reason at all. Chop chop!"*

and so forth.

* I may have made this one up.

The current trial is AFAIK City of Heroes: Going Rogue... hence why it starts in Praetoria. Once i21 hits there will no longer be any trial as the game will be free to play.

Hey thanks! I made a second toon and started him in Galaxy CIty. I have to say that I love the game so far!! The community has been great.
I held out all these years just so I could play DC Universe Online. Man, what a mistake that was. I should have started playing this years ago...

I even made a video about this a few years ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKiaHFI_62k You are saving the world for someone and they wont even give you their phone number.

My sympathies.

I thought it was pretty funny how in the first couple weeks they were talking about how they couldn't keep the stores stocked with it. Then 75% of their players quit after the first month. I guess being a superhero's flunky isn't as fun as actually being the superhero yourself. That's whay I didn't want to play it at all, once I found out you spend the entire game in the shadow of the signature characters.

(Here, the signature characters generally stay out of your way)

Yes, yes you should have.

Welcome aboard!
