I have been gone for a few months and just returning to the game, I have seen in some forum posts a mention of the "incarnate softcap" would someone please explain this to me? Not sure if this was refering to the def softcap and in trials you need higher than 45.

The defense softcap is 45%. However, the enemies in the Incarnate trials have elevated tohit, requiring (IIRC) 55% def to floor all of them in the same way that 45% floors enemies outside the trials.

As I'm sure you know, critters at your level and up to 6 levels above you have a base 50% chance to hit you. Personal Defense lowers that to a minimum 5% (times rank Accuracy, which can bring an AV's minimum to hit up to about 10%). Which means, having more than 45% Defense is useless... in a majority of cases. If a foe has +ToHit buff or applies a -Def debuff to you, having more than 45% Defense is better.

Some of the foes in Incarnate Trials have a base 64% chance to hit you. This means you need 59% personal Defense to floor their chance to hit you down to the minimum of 5%.

Is it worth building up to that? No.

Incarnate Trials are purposely designed such that no one can solo them. They are truly team encounters. With a large league of teammates and allies, their team buffs should easily stack to take you to the new soft cap of 59%. You just have to be careful about running off by yourself in an iTrial. But two small Defense inspirations will bring you up to the new iTrial soft cap.

I have been following this 'defense softcap' thing since I started lurking the forums.
Could you all help me to understand some things?

I understand that even level minions have a base 50% chance to hit. Doesn't the base chance to get a +5% per level above and -5% per level below? Don't critters get another +5% per shift up the Lt/Boss/EB/AV scale?

No. Their chance of hitting is dependent on two factors their To Hit rating and their Accuracy. Unless the NPC is +6 or higher relative to you their To Hit rating remains at 50% regardless of relative level or rank (some enemies do have to hit buffs, but ignore that for now). Now what enemies of higher level and/or rank do get is increased Accuracy. That means that their chance of hitting you does increase but since they do not get any To Hit bonuses increased defense has no effect.

I personally just carry a few extra purples in iTrials. If I find myself in a situation where I'm taking on a lot of enemies with little team help, I pop a purple, which closes the Incarnate Soft Cap pretty readily.

I seldom use em on BAF, use them frequently during the sabotage phase in Lambda, and Keyes is completely random lol.
