First Time Defender

Evening all! Okay, i have promised myself that after running through 100's of BAF and LAM's I would start working on a few new characters and focus on AT's I dont usually play. So here I am with my first defender past 25 and I am wondering if I choose the wrong combination.

I went with cold/ice and while I am starting to see the possibilities I am wondering if this girl is destined for greatness or mediocrity? I played dark on my MM's so I didnt want to go that route and am working on a DP/Traps corrupter (another AT i never played much of) so I wanted to do something a little different.

Her build looks solid but still wondering if this girl will be able to do great things solo and with teams? What do you think?

You did not choose a bad combo at all. One of the best for AOE destruction. Plays sorta like a blaster except with +End tools, team Def buffs, and pretty nasty debuffs..

Before you get your def capped, it could be a bit rough, as you can easily grab a TON of aggro, but once you lean when to cut loose, when not to and/or get your defenses up, you'll have a very nasty defender on your hands.

Just happens to bloom a little later than a lot of other defs.

Cold/ice is a late bloomer. Sleet, ice storm, blizzard, heat loss is tremendous sequence. Benumb is is another great debuff. Don't overlook the utility in snowstorm. Slow is a great mitigator, too. If you team, I would definitely recommend picking up glacial shield earlier.

HelinCarnate:OMG it is so terrible. I have the option to take 3 more powers but no additional slots. Boo F'ing hoo.

It's an okay combo, the slows from both primary and secondary adds up greatly. But reviewing your build, you have 7 gobal bonus sets that are the same, (3 positron sets thats 5 slotted, 3 sets of Decimations-also 5 slotted and a Expediant Reinforcement set of 4 slots which also grants 6.25% global recharge bonus of 6.25%) which 2 of either sets are not accounted for. The max is 5 bonus sets of the same value. However, you can have 5 LoTg's + 7.5% global recharge IO's and an addition of 5 sets granting also 7.5% global recharges because they both are two different kinds of type that does not counter with each other on a build. If you can afford an Apocalypse set and a Ragnorok set, that will give you an addition 20% added global recharge plus the other goodies that comes with purple or superior rare io sets.

Cold/Ice is great. I play Ice/Cold instead, as a corruptor. You have the standard spread of debuffs, lots of -res from stackable sleet and Heat Loss, and respectable single-target and AoE damage with blaster-scale Ice Storm and blizzard.

Cold has only 2 problems:

1) It blooms late, with Sleet and Heatloss at the very end

2) It gives less protection for you compared to the other debuff powersets. Cold is unusual since it gets ally shields instead of -ToHit or heals. The main mitigation is -Rech which I found to be not effective.

1) won't be a problem for long if you like the character and 2) can be fixed with IOs or careful play.
