Another SD/SS build...

I know there are many builds out there, but I have been off for a few months and want to work on my tank. I have a somewhat cheap build, with my current generic IO build on alternate. My biggest problem is end, and am still learning about this new Incarnate stuff.

Is this an ok, but not uber build, and what suggestions on Incarnate powers. Shes kinda a Cap clone, so I was trying not to be to flashy.

OK, the IO build is on alternative build, not the generic IO's, sorry.

Long forum export takes up an excessive amount of space on the page when people are using Mids' to look at the build anyways. Short forum export is fine. Also, the links do not work for some people, so a data chunk helps.

I'm not seeing the IO set build. I clicked on slots and flip all to alternate but that is blank. Try making a new file instead of using the alternate slots. I'm not sure if it works right when importing from forums.



Some tips on your generic IO build:

Combat Jumping does not need more than two defense IOs. The third one does very little and the base endurance cost is so low that the endurance reduction would be better in another power.

Taunt generally does not need to be enhanced on most builds. Some use it for the nice set bonuses, though. One recharge or range is all it needs in your generic IO build. Accuracy doesn't matter unless you PvP or tank Hamidon, and you won't be a main Hamidon tank, most likely. Taunt is auto-hit in normal PvE. Against All Odds is an amazing taunt aura. Even Scrappers with it can hold aggro with little effort, so you won't need Taunt except for initial pulls of AVs.

Aid self isn't very useful unless you slot it for healing and recharge too.

All of your attacks could be slotted better. They are the likely cause of your endurance issues. Use the slots you gain by unslotting Taunt and Combat Jumping to add a second endurance reduction to your attacks. Recharge reduction helps you do more damage by making your best attacks come up more often. Consider reducing the damage IOs to two since you have Rage for damage bonus too.

The choices you made for most of your sets are far from optimal. What is your goal for the character? If you just want a cheap tank, this build will do. If you want a tank that can run a good attack chain with perma-Hasten while having 95% defense debuff resistance and 45% defense, that can be done but requires a lot of changes.

The main thing you should do is consider moving your slots around. It looks like you are trying to force an IO set build out of a build that was designed for SOs. If you can't respec, you can use one of your two other builds by talking to a trainer.

Also, please stop using long forum export and don't include the set bonus totals.

OK first off what do you want out of this tank? What are you looking to get out of it? Remember most of the things you will fight will do S/L damage. I worked on your build did a little change here and there to get you more recharge and better s/l damage. Thing you have to remember is Activate def is your thing to not to get Held KBed or stuff like that.

What I'm looking for is a mid cost build that will soft cap my defs and help solve some of my end issues. Is the soft cap still 45? I would love to eventually get to this build, but am limited in inf at the moment. I have just got into the incarnate stuff with my scrapper and am kinda lost. Learning through trial and error, and that costs inf. I never should have let Dragon Age suck me in again, lost a few months play time in coh.

Enough recharge for a decient attack chain would also be nice.

Any build that doesn't include PvP IOs or purple sets is affordable for the average player. Some inventions may take a little longer to acquire, but can be obtained in a reasonable amount of time.

Playing the market is the most effective way to make INF, but it takes a fairly large initial investment and has a lot of risk. Farming is another option, but requires certain powerset combinations and a build to be highly effective.

The method I suggest for most new players is to obtain INF through alignment merits. Any character 25 or over can purchase Luck of the Gambler global recharge recipes for two alignment merits, which sold for over 100 million crafted last time I checked. Obtaining tips goes fast if you can kill level 25ish bosses in Terra Volta. If not, level 20ish mobs can be found in Dark Astoria in fairly large packs, but the bosses that drop tips more often are fairly rare. If you have enough stealth, or a durable character like a Tanker that can run past things, you can run through 5 tip missions in 15 minutes. Do that on a few characters a day and you'll be rolling in billions of INF in a couple weeks.

My whole point is that you shouldn't let INF be the limiting factor in your build. If you really want a great build, you can get it in less time than other MMOs take to get end-game gear. You just have to know where to focus your efforts.

The problem with that is you have to have GR but there is another way you can get them and that is with Merits you get from TFs and finishing off story arcs. With the A-Merits you have to do 5 tip mish a day but you only get 1 A-merit every other day. You can get merits really quick if you do a few TFs plus you can get the drops of some of the things you need or lot of inf from this.

Here's a build with no purples or PvP IOs, and the expensive IOs--the LotG recharge, for instance, can easily be replaced with the much less expensive LotG Res/Rchg. You could also replace the LotG sets altogether with something like Gift of the Ancients or Serendipity since the build doesn't depend on them to soft-cap.

For the Heal sets, unless you're 4 or 5 slotting the power IMO Numina's is a better choice because it has better bonuses than Doctored Wounds. However, DW will give you the same levels of enhancement.

The recovery/regen uniques in Health are nice to have, but are definitely something to work toward; in the meantime common Heal IOs will do fine.

A Shield tank definitely does NOT need Maneuvers to soft cap, and you'd be better served by taking Grant Cover for the Defense Debuff Resistance. This build has nearly 50% defense with no Maneuvers, and Aid Self is slotted enough to be useful. You can also slot Membranes in Active Defense to increase DDR, but that is expensive, approximately 150 million per enhancement.

For a choice of Alpha slot, you can't go wrong with Spiritual with almost any powerset combination. It would only be a waste on Masterminds. Musculature isn't bad, but the benefits are minimal (especially with Rage active) due to the way damage buffs are added together. Nerve is probably the most useless Alpha boost because it is fairly easy to reach 95% hit chance. Cardiac is mostly good on endurance-heavy sets like Dark Armor, or sets like Electric and Stone Armor so they can reach 90% resistance in certain categories.

Interface debuffs have a very small limit per mob, so it doesn't matter what you choose. Reactive is popular for the damage proc, but works better on sets with fast attacks and damage auras. Rebirth would probably be the best Destiny choice if you choose the regeneration route. You won't need endurance badly enough to warrant Ageless. Barrier's defense won't help you and the resistance portion doesn't last long enough. It would be better to take One With the Shield for emergencies where you need resistance. Clarion's status protection is pointless on a Tanker. Judgment and Lore are personal preference. They all function similar and none have a major advantage or disadvantage.

The above build is good if you're not looking for a top-end build.

Okay, a few problems I see right away.

First, Deflection is primarily a defense power rather than a resistance power. I'd 4-slot LotG then add a couple of slots of resistance. Simiarly, True Grit can be slotted for resistance, though IMO it's not as important since Deflection adds to S/L resistance.

Secondly, Kinetic Combat is a *very* expensive way to get a relatively small amount of melee defense--remember, you want positional defense, not typed for Shields. If you need it--and you may not--six-slotting Touch of Death will give you twice as much melee defense as Kinetic Combat.

Eradication is a great set for E/NE defense, but not so great for Ranged defense. I'd go with a full set of Mako's Bite instead. I recommend Scirocco's Dervish in Foot Stomp for the AoE defense.

Be sure to take Shield Charge at 26 and Rage at 28. Phalanx Fighting is a good power, but SC and Rage are among the real highlights of SD/SS.

I do recommend Retified Reticle for typed defense builds, but for positional I think a full set of Gaussian's is the way to go, since it gives 2.5% defense to all positions.

You really don't need Maneuvers to soft-cap Shield Defense on a tank, I'd recommend dropping it and picking up SoW instead.

Grant Cover is very overslotted; it only adds to your teammates defense, not yours.

Here's what I would do with your build, I replaced Maneuvers with SoW and reslotted so you're at about 50% defense to all positions. It's got a bit more recharge because of the Crushing Impact sets.

Manuevers and grant cover are for the team, I usually team with a dark/elec defender, my mids is showing a 220% global recharge with hasten on, thats enough for permahasten. This is a costly build and will take awhile to get to, but the numbers look great.

Why are you five-slotting Reactive Armor in Deflection? It's not netting you very much additional resistance to S/L and the positional defense bonuses are less than 1% each! Really, totally not worth slotting. Put an LotG set in there instead and you can skip the ToD set and get the benefit of the LotG bonuses to boot.

Not sure why you're so set on slotting True Grit with Doctored Wounds since the bonuses are so mediocre. Also the Imperv Armor in TG is a complete waste since it's improving your Psi resists from 3% to a whopping 6%. Two resistance commons would be much more beneficial there.

Combat Jumping's end cost is tiny; replace the LotG Def/End with a Defense.

Ditto my comment on the Imperv Armor Psi resist for the Aegis Psi resist. Having 6% psi resistance is almost exactly the same as having none. SoW would be a great place to put the Steadfast +Def, BTW.

Maneuvers is way overslotted for end reduction. The Def/End and Def/End/Rchg is sufficient end reduction, so drop the End and End/Rchg for the Def and Def/Rchg.

With Deflection properly slotted, even dropping the ToD set you'll have more melee defense than you need, but there are definitely worse fates.

Grant Cover's radius is only 15, which isn't big enough to avoid most AoE attacks. Your Defender friend is better off staying out of range than in it. Besides, Defenders can easily soft-cap to S/L and E defenses thanks to Scorpion Shield. Your job is to hold aggro, not buff others.

Finduilas hinted at it, but it needs to be said directly. Gaussian's is the most efficient defense per slot set available, after the two 3% defense inventions. It should be in every positional defense build.

Did you know that taking a travel power without taking other powers in the pool requires the 60-month veteran badge? Also, Flight as a travel power is nearly useless now. You can buy jet packs for almost nothing at a NPC vendor and fly at capped flight speeds. I don't see giving up Hasten worth taking a travel power that has been replaced by nearly-free items.

I would get rid of Punch in the build. You won't need it with enough recharge. Besides, you are waiting too long to take Battle Agility in the build. Those first ten levels will be a pain without ranged defenses.

You will need enough recharge to double-stack Active Defense all the time if you want to ignore defense debuffs. Hasten is needed to do this, usually.

As I mentioned in my other post, the Cardiac Alpha isn't a very good choice. You won't have endurance problems and you need more recharge than anything in order to keep Active Defense double-stacked. The healing bonus affects True Grit and your regeneration.

You shouldn't need the Kismet 6% to-hit with Rage's to-hit bonus.

You can get by without Physical Perfection. If you pick up Soul Mastery from Villain side, you can get one of the best single-target attacks available to Tankers (Gloom) and pick up an extra AoE attack.



The following is a gutted-out and re-made version of your build. It reaches the soft-cap efficiently and slots key powers with the minimum slots. If you take the build and add recharge bonuses, HP bonuses, and recovery bonuses, you can't go wrong as long as you don't make many changes to what is already there. The only power I removed was Maneuvers so you can have Hasten. You may still need to remove Flight.

Tough lacks slotting because you are at 45.5% defense to all positions with this build. You could frankenslot it with res/end IOs from different sets or go for the 5% recharge bonus. Beware of the rule of 5's for set bonuses though because it is easy to reach 5 of the 5% recharges on a melee build.

You won't need any more defense than what is here. You will shrug off defense debuffs with this build as long as you put Active Defense on auto-fire and click Hasten when it comes up.

Oh, sure, listen to *him*.

Purples are fine, if you want to spend the money for extra recharge, go for it.

However, I think the GA +Def is totally wasted on a character that's as easy to soft-cap as a Shield tank. Give it to a character that might really need it to soft-cap, like your scrapper.

Just want to reiterate my previous comment: Shield Charge at 26, Rage at 28, period. IMO, PF and Weave can definitely wait and you'll want SC and Rage if you ever exemp for a TF or the like. If you feel you absolutely need PF and/or Weave before 30, delay something else like Fly or Taunt instead.
