Rage and other click auras

I hope this is the right place for this and that there isn't already a thread somewhere, but I couldn't find one.

Powers like Rage and Strength of Will--click powers--often have auras (in the case of rage, it's one heck of a really bright one) that you can't turn off like other toggle auras. This can be a problem in low FX concepts.

For example, I have a SS/WP who I don't want to have any auras for concept, and I can turn off the FX in most of the WP powers, but the best I can do is to grey Rage and SoW out. With SoW it's not that bad, but when I gray out the Rage aura he ends up looking, well, kinda hazy around the edges, like he's out of focus.

Is there a reason that these types of powers don't have a "no aura" option? Would it be a big deal, since the interface for Primary and Secondary powers is already set up anyway, to just give us the option to turn them off in PVE also?

BTW, I love that COH has auras associated with powers and I think the aruas are great, but I also think it was great to give the conceptual flexibility of being able to turn them off. In the case of Rage, I have to either glow like the sun or look out of focus like Bigfoot in a video sighting :P.

Thanks!

My suggestion. Look past them. They're more like "hey look you have this power activated" than "OH hey look you're sparkly like a vampire from twilight"

Not that I'm against the suggestion, but before power customization, this was a valid way to look at it. I know I didnt think my regen back in i3 didn't glow green in my mind.

While this is the first request for Rage, specifically, that I've seen, requests to turn off the effects of powers have been quite common.

As for a "reason" as to why these powers haven't been addressed yet: my educated estimate is that they just haven't gotten around to it yet. The effects team is aware that there are a number of powers in the game for which people would prefer a "Minimal FX" option (the most oft requested being Hasten, I believe). I suggest heading over to the All Things Art - FX Edition thread and making a post similar to this. Tunnel Rat has been keeping an eye on that thread, and has acknowledged many requests similar to this one.

There are two types of power effects in the game - representation and depictions.

Depiction effects are the effects of powers which are intended to have some kind of visible physical effect to them. Being covered in fire makes you... Well, covered in fire. Visibly so. Covering your body in stone armour will, similarly, need to display your body covered in stone. These are effects for which there isn't a No FX option, and likely never will be. It would be like asking to use Assault Rifle with an invisible rifle.

Representations are the graphics given to powers which normally have no abnormal look to them. These are abstract graphics only tangentially related to what they are trying to represent. Being very strong or very tough does not make one glow or burst into flames (Dragon Ball Z notwithstanding), but because the driving prerogative of making the game back at Launch was "EVERYTHING has an aura!" then these powers needed something to represent them and to signify that they were active. Thus, Super Strength got the glowing yellow arms, Martial Arts got the disco ball feet, Invulnerability got the stacking rainbows and so on.

Representation effects should and need to have a No FX option, for the simple fact that not everyone wants an artist's rendition of what toughness looks like as depicted by glowing arms. What an abstract representation of a concept which normally has no visible representation in real life are a no-win situation, as each individual has a different "internal image" of what these things should look like. Should being invulnerable make you glow, make you sparkle, make you burst into flame, make your skin turn into metal or... What, really? There are a zillion ways to depict those things, and while I'm pretty confident that all new "abstract" powers we get will come with graphics attached, they will still need to enable us to remove the representation entirely and rely on costume and actual character action to deliver the message across.

In short, I agree.

From Tunnel Rat:

A few of you have proposed a system that allows players to suppress certain effects or turn off buffs placed on them by other players. This is a possible long-term solution, but one that requires a significant amount of coding time. Since our programmers are swamped right now, this system is likely a long way off, if it is greenlit at all.
It may fall under such a system eventually, but I wouldn't argue with something like that being added to power customization with a minimal/no FX option. (The current look doesn't bother me, but hey, I'm not everyone.)

Instead of graying, can't you just put the color to black? I mean, I haven't done this to Rage myself, but most powers/auras go nigh invisible when set to black.

Edit: Well, auras at least. I suppose you can't really go black on the "bright" settings for rage, and the dark settings are quite noticeable. Never mind.
