Please take a look at the referenced pics and give some comments

I'll note one piece of art was $300 from Genzoman who does work for Blizzard

the other was $120 from someone who does private commissions (my funds are tighter than before and a fund-raising campaign failed)

One is clearly better, technically, but i don't know if it's better for what you want it for.

If I'm to base it off a purely technical point of view the white haired girl one is what i'd choose.

I suspect that that one is also the Blizzard guy one (just looked yup).

The cheaper one is an acceptable replacement and probably a better deal all things considered.

the first one is for book one

the second is planned for book two

I'm trying to get impression as to whether it would be a mistake to use the cheaper one for the second book or not

I actually am battling myself on which way is better...

I'd say for marketing purposes put the $300 one on the 1st book, but people might get a bad taste because they see the lower quality on the 2nd one and might not buy it because they don't want to risk you just cashing in on the success of the first

on the other hand if people perceive the front cover as ameteurish which it does to me you might not get the sale on book, but if they see the second book they may see that you're improving and thus give both books a try

You're taking risk with both ways and I don't know how well the art is perceived the art is in general. I think they're close enough that people won't pick up the quality differences of them that easy.

of course there is also what cover fits with either book... is one of the characters more prominently featured in one book or the other? if so you might go that route.

Both are quite good and seem to capture the character's personality. These are to be book covers for novels?

yeah, the first novel is already out:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0040GJBS2

but the second book is one of four I've been working on for trying to get out before the end of the year (I'm sitting right around 50% done on three of four projects, and slowed down by stuff I'm doing for other people and day-work because, well, have to eat)

the consensus I'm getting within the last 2-3 hours of putting up the poll is that both are good which as alleviating my worry

I must say, I like the background on magion's better than Genzoman's but it's mostly due to appropriateness to that planned story...

and Lucretia is a clothes horse and something of a costume-girl, each cover is likely to show her wearing something different, since the second book involves researching a haunting at an international airport, figured stewardess would work

quote from first book from the chapter describing Lu's apartment

The marksman looked down at the clothes and arched an eyebrow as he crossed the room and entered the bedroom, or what would be a bedroom for most people, Lucretia’s interests really came clear. Every extra bit of money she could excuse herself for spending was directed at one of two things: books and dresses.

The bedroom was full of plastic boxes holding specific outfits and their accessories, and racks holding the cheaper more run of the mill dresses Lu wore when she was working or planning to go out on the town. One tall bookshelf was filled with dictionaries from dozens of languages, the bottom row containing about fifteen English to whatever dictionaries for the tongues she had less understanding of. Three more were mostly filled with history texts, with half the last shelving unit dedicated to spy books and science-fiction. Stuffed on top of some of the books were two faded pieces of quality paper that he could vaguely see the words University of Phoenix filigreed on them.

Sightseer looked over a couple of the boxes, labeled in whatever language was native to the dress style contained within, and picked one up, almost at random. He glanced inside a moment before leaving the room, enough to confirm that the sloppy Arabic letters on the labeling meant it was something middle-eastern, and then he presented it to Lu coming out of the bathroom.

Not sure what to say, really...
The two are very different styles.

I think the best way I can say it is that the purple one is a bit too lifeless for my tastes.

Maybe if the hair were just a bit more flowing... and maybe a bit more white.

That being said, I am not convinced it is too bad to use or anything.
Just looking at the two in comparison, those were my opinions (even without comparing, actually).

Of course, it is possible that this book veers the character into a situation more befitting of this stark look and feel. If that were a major part of the story it makes much more sense.

Hope that helps in some way!

EDIT:
Just realized that this whole post sounds way more negative about the one pic than I really feel!
The bottom line is that THAT as a cover for a novel is not a turn off to me at all.
I actually like the way it pops, and I think that is a very good quality for a book cover.

If they're covers to paperback novels, I don't think you're in any worry over which to use.

Maybe if they were graphic novels, but they're not.

that does help, making the hair too white wouldn't be appropriate....it's silver, not white....but yeah, I worried the same thing about seeming a bit flat

however, the consensus is that it still works as a book cover

and since next cover does delve into some of her backstory, might work

I'm gonna have to go with the one with the whiter hair and striped clothing.. The image as a whole jumps out and grabs me more than the other one.

Both are very good pieces of work in my opinion though.
