Dark Melee/SD or Fiery Melee/SD?

Hi,

I'm going for a very high damage, (mostly single target but maybe some aoe) scrapper build, and after reading through the forums, I'm undecided between DM or FM / SD (or is there another combination that can produce top scrapper dps?). I read that DM/SD has the highest DPS attack chain but requires several mobs around to get the most out of Siphon Life (edit- and soul drain) while FM might be easier to obtain a top attack chain.

I have anywhere between 1-4 billion to spend on the build and I'll be using it mostly for TFs/Trials/Group and Solo Missions.

Thank you.

The part in red is roughly accurate.

Here is another bit to help you decide:

DM/SD wins on survivability through Siphon Life.

FM/SD wins on AoE damage.

If you are a primarily team focused player, and want a top end scrapper to run on TFs/Trials, etc - I would recommend FM/SD/Blaze

If you are a primarily solo player, and you are specifically interested in doing 'Scrapper Challenges' like soloing AVs or TFs with no inspirations, etc - then DM/SD is better.

As for top scrapper DPS - there are a few combos actually. I'll let others chime in there.

If you don't want to be dependent on having multiple targets around you for DPS, Fiery Melee is better. But if you truly don't want to be dependent on multiple targets, you might as well not go SD either. This opens up the options of Dual Blades and Fiery Aura for maximum independent DPS.

Dual Blades is expensive to cap out, as its top chain requires a ton of recharge and it shines on expensive IO's.

Fiery Aura is very squishy if you don't spend slots on defense and spend them on damage bonuses and recharge bonuses instead. And if you don't spend slots on defense you'll be using Healing Flames constantly, which will cut into your DPS. So using two slot hungry powersets together can be difficult.

I went for Dual Blades/SR, as that gave me a lot of freedom with the slots. Top chain with Musculature and lots of damage bonuses from sets=awesome.

Someone also mentioned Broad Sword/SD. Is that a viable top DPS set?

Play what you think you will have fun with. Pouring a good amount of INF into a character will produce fairly similar results for DPS and survivability, if done right. The only times certain builds are better than others are in extreme scenarios not encountered during regular play.

Yeah, think I might just go Fire/Shield, seems to be well rounded and a top performer. Should I go Musculature alpha? Spiritual?

I ended up going cardiac on mine because he had endurance issues, but he's got a pretty cheap build.

My guess is no since it has longer recharges(BS has always been about burst vs. DPS), but most of the sets that beat BS can't use /sd either.

I went with Cardiac, but it was a choice of convenience rather than design. Spiritual can help reach your recharge goals if you're trying to double stack Active Defense or pull off a high DPS attack chain. But if you can hit all your recharge goals without it, Musculature sounds the most tempting to me. It'll help endurance a little, and then it'll pump out more damage. If I get around to investing some time playing my Fire/Shield and working on a new build, I suspect I'll be switching to Musculature. But he's quite good with Cardiac, so I'm not in a rush.

As tempting as musculature is, I think Cardiac is the better fit for FM.

Unless you have a very specific attack chain with a specific recharge goal, I don't think you should go spiritual.

I changed a FM/SD build I found on the forums to a non-purple build to save some money. It's soft capped in defense, but the damage seems a little lower compared to some other builds I've seen. Suggestions?

I'm a bit of a noob but my scrapper is nearing 50 and I'm starting to draw some builds.

One thing is obvious, it all depends on your playstyle.

That said, a few comments on that build:
-Stamina is lacking, at least to me. I'm always out of end, I'd rather slot it with 4 perf shifters as per builds I'll post below
-I like melt armor fully slotted for awesome debuffing
-Shield charge is a must 6 slot for me, I love AoE

Anyways, two kinda *recent* builds people posted, I forgot who, so credits to them, not mine:

Moderate cost scrapper, from the thread with several budget builds:

Its a great build, because:
-Melt amor is there and owning
-End for the masses!
-Great def
-Overall performs well

Things I would change, but didn't crunch the numbers:
-6 slot FSC
-Why Sorch and not Fire sword?
-I realize GFS is SLOW AS HECK to animate and sometimes its useless as the mob is already down, is that why its out?
-I'd probably skip travel power and get something like combat jump with KD resist or something like that, HATE KD.

Then theres this other build, without melt armor, so I think it fits you:

Unless you have a very specific attack chain with a specific recharge goal, I don't think you should go spiritual.
I think it entirely depends on your build. Mine is a non-purple soft-cap build so my +recharge is not so hot. So I went Spiritual. Plus I have Aid Self and the Incarnate Destiny Heal, so the +heal in Spiritual is very helpful to me. I don't have any end issues either so that makes Cardiac less appealing. Musculature is a good option is you feel that you have enough recharge and don't value the +heal.

At any rate FM/Shield/Fire is my favorite melee character by far so far. Flashy, fun, offensive, defensive. It does it all (for me).
