VIP Subscription Cost vs. Current Subscription Cost
Where to find me after the end:
The Secret World - Arcadia - Shinzo
Rift - Faeblight - Bloodspeaker
LotRO - Gladden - Aranelion
STO - Holodeck - @Captain_Thiraas
Obviously, I don't care about NCSoft's forum rules, now.

I agree BUT some of us are on budgets. Do you think we will wait until we have enough VIP points to purchase a power or costume pack or power? Maybe. More than likely, I doubt it.
Makes me kinda wonder why keep paying a monthly sub. I know if I don't it may lock some of your toons (if you have a ton of alts like me). That is my concern. I don't mind reduced content access; most of the content is a re-hash; I am betting the signature arc will be the same old maps with a new story (*yawn*); and the trials are kinda lame after the first 50 times ( ). Anyway, something to mull over... |
Right now, when a booster comes out i really want i either wait until a holiday and beg my relatives, or i go without (as in, without the booster) until i can afford it.
I've also used all my character slots, and while i do want more, i can't afford it, so i go without.
With the new system in place i earn 400 points a month, by just paying what i normally pay, which means over time, i can buy that booster pack i want (or really, just the costumes in said pack) or buy additional character slots without actually having to change my budget at all. I see that as a net GAIN instead of a net LOSE.
As a percentage of product, I believe our subscription will be buying us less than it used to. As an absolute amount of product, I believe our subscription will be buying us more.
We will be getting more for our subscription money, but there will be more stuff we can choose to spend yet still more money on. I discuss the same concept here, with visuals. |
I intend to maintain my yearly paid account. It costs me less to play City of Heroes (on a monthly basis) than it would for me to go to a movie and get a drink and a popcorn; I get much more enjoyment from City of Heroes, and more time spent with friends (both online and real life). And no one throws popcorn at Me if we laugh out loud, chat, etc. YMMV!
Duty, it is the most sublime word in the English language, you can never do more, you should never wish to do less.
To make it really adventagous for those staying that have held on for along time (in my case over 5.5 yrs) I think you should to take a lesson from the only other online super hero game, give the "VIP" players unlimited free access to new powers archtypes, new game areas and maybe free rent on bases. Things like that would have a lasting effect in keeping long term players like myself ... who, although I love COH, am on the fence whether I stay, or not.

I've not played the other superheroes game, but have played a certain fantasy mmo based on a TSR role-playing game. When it went to free to play, ViP members received monthly points for their store, had full access to all new content, lost nothing in regards to items and unlockables, and the monthly fee remained the same. What cost them a large amount of player base was the fact that you could purchase those unlocks from the store. Many felt that it was a form of cheating and gave new f2p members the ability to sidestep the process of earning rewards. In CoH Freeom it would be comperable to getting accolades, epic ATs, etc. by just paying out a buttload of money for points and then purchasing the content. Things here may be different, will just have to wait and see.

Temp Powers are a little more in the gray area, but the game has had that issue since Vet Rewards were introduced, so going to a market system isn't really altering the current state aside from accelerating when you can gain certain things, instead of waiting for the correct vet badge to be awarded. They are fringe benefits, and as long as items in the market stay on the fringe, that makes the most people happy. The folks that feel that these things are necessary can get them when they want, and those that find them optional aren't affected by those that spent their money on it. It's a tough balance, but I think the Devs and the Marketing team can pull it off satisfactorily.
Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.
So far, of the things you listed for this game, none of that can currently be purchased. You can purchase the ability to play the epics, for example, but you still have to qualify through game play to actually make one, just like paying customers. You can purchase access to First Ward, but all that does is open the door. There is no in-game advantage or disadvantage to being able to go or not.

From what you've stated, it would seem that the devs are making a strong attempt at ensuring the satisfaction of both sides of the issue. Thats always a good thing.
Now, you spend extra $$ for new goodies when they appear.
Soon, you will spend $$ for Paragon Points, and then spend THEM on new goodies when they appear. In the interim, Paragon Studios will be paying you a small refund of your monthly sub, in Paragon Points... so while your spending habits will not have changed, in the long term you will pay a bit less in actual, you know, money.
I can see the argument of your spending habits CHANGING, however....
