Hey guys, I'm new to the Defender AT and Rad/Sonic looks like just my thing. I'm looking at Mid's and the power/IO selection is a little overwhelming, specially since I don't know where to start as I have no personal experience with the set.

I'm hoping the more experienced Defenders out their can share their builds and any helpful knowledge they'd like to share which I'm sure will help me and many others. Thanks!

Here's my current build. It's not the most powerful around, but I enjoy the performance I get out of it and have been able to take down a GM with it (Ghost of Scrapyard is the only one I've bothered trying on so far.) It uses two of the fairly inexpensive purple sets and no PVP IOs. I'm not sure if mids shows it in build exports but this build uses the Spiritual Alpha Core. Thanks Zandock. I notice I don't see "Shout" on a lot of Rad/Sonic builds, I thought they were just old/outdated, but you don't seem to have it either. Is it just not high enough damage? Range too short?

I think it's because Shout has a agonizingly long activation time, and actually causes you to do significantly less damage over time.

Pretty much. With enough recharge you just spam the T1 and T2 attacks and keep a nice DPS going as well as stacking your -res efficiently. I've heard adding in Screech at some point can help out, but I like being able to just focus on using my two attacks when I'm trying to take on something like an AV. On teams all you'll usually have time for on most spawns is setting down Enervating Field and launching a Howl before most of the enemies get mopped up.

Below is the build I came up with based on the above. I have around 29% defense to everything, base 108.8% recharge, and 60% S/L as well as 43% energy resistance. I tried fitting Hover in, but it would mean giving up Stealth losing ~4% defense and 7.5% recharge from lotg in Grant Invisibility as well as having "Superior Invisibility" from Stealth+Super Speed. I'm thinking it would be a good idea to trade Tactics for Assault, but not 100% sure on this. Would appreciate feedback!

It's basically the same as the one above it with a full Gladiator armor set in Charged Armor and moved the Def% IO from Tough to Charged Armor.

I know you are looking for various builds with this post, but let me ask you all a few questions about the power selections for this toon (Shout has already been addressed):

Why go with Vengeance over Fallout - Fallout looks pretty slick, especially with the extreme dmg. I assume because it costs too much endurance, is overkill on debuff, and has a long cast time?

I notice most builds don't take Dreadful Wail, and a lot of people don't take EM Pulse - I am guessing that the Endurance crash is too much on a build that already has a lot of toggles?

In terms of controls, you went with EM Pulse, Siren's Song and Screech - and didn't bother with Choking Cloud and Elec Shackles - are they not very good powers since their mag and durations are so low?

Lastly, I see you went with the Spiritual Alpha, which makes sense for Perma-Haste and Perma-AM, not to mention spamming Shriek and Scream. What about the other Incarnates:

Destiny - Ageless seems redundant, and you already have a heal so why go with Rebirth - so Clarion for Status Protection, or Barrier to boost Defenses seem like viable options.

Judgement - Pyronic Core seems an obvious choice for an AoE attack with the less resisted Fire dmg, especially since this toon already has plenty of Energy attacks.

Interface - I could see most of these powers serving this toon well. Recommendations?

Lore - I love my Warworks and Seers for my melee class toons, nice to have a ranged pets and some decent debuffs. I don't know much about the Defensive Orbs, but IDF looks nice for a ranged Defender - seems like a couple of Brutes on hand that you can keep alive with heals would be a great fit. Thoughts?

1. Veng vs Fallout: Both are situational, but Vengeance has the benefit of taking a lotg 7.5% recharge IO as well as being easier to use.

2. EM Pulse does not have an End crash, only -Recovery which can be offset with blues and won't cause your toggles to drop.

3. Choking Cloud would require me to be in melee range, and it's only a short duration mag 1 hold.

4. I would take Elec Shackles, but I don't have the slots. Siren's Song takes a fairly cheap purple set which provides some good bonuses and Screech has a lower recharge as well as an IO set with good bonuses. I don't see myself needing more than 2 ST CC powers, but I haven't had any experience with this build so it's possible I may change my opinion in the future.

5. Destiny - I would probably go with Barrier or Clarion.

Judgement - Ion or Pyro. Most likely Pyro, since Ion can 'fail' if your target dies while you're casting it.

Interface - Reactive Radial for more damage.

Lore - Warworks most likely, since it appears to provide the highest dps, but I'm interested in the new pets being released.

I'm also considering this build with Hover, just not sure if it's worth losing all that defense and resistance:

1 less toggle though, and End friendly conserve power. Can also replace a lotg 7.5% recharge with the 3% Res enh from Shield Wall.

Hover and Stealth give the same amount of defense. You have to decide if a pool choice and two power picks is worth 7.5% rech for you. The survivability that hover brings is very substantial against many targets. I'm really not sure why you've picked the APPs that you have. If you want a res shield, go Electric mastery so you can pick up Electric Fence. It works great in an attack chain with Shriek and Scream, and keep a big target off of you if you don't want to use Hover.

The latest build with Hover is actually a choice between Fighting or Hover. I think I will stick with the Hover build since it has less toggles and Hover can be very useful as you said.

It also has Power Mastery primarily because it has a Res S/L Res shield I can put the Glad. Armor 3% Def IO *and* Force of Nature which I can use to put a Steadfast Protection: 3% Def IO. as well as use as a panic button.

But I did go back and see what I could change and managed to get similar results with this build which includes better resists (46.3% S/L/E) + a pet (Mu Adept). It was between the pet and a hold (Electric Shackles) and I went with the pet so I could keep cycling between Shriek and Scream to keep up the -Res debuff.
