Arch/EM
Since the issue with blasters is survivability your best bet is probably going to be building for defense (this is true for most blasters).
However it depends mostly on play style and what you envision doing with your Arch/EM. Are you mostly soloing? Mostly pugging? Teaming exclusively with friends/SG mates?
For Arch/EM I usually reccomend a ranged defense build, utilizing hover to stay out of melee, and Alpha Cardiac (one of the versions that boost range by an extra 20%).

Alternative is to soft-cap Smash/Lethal instead of ranged. Really depends on your play style. Arch/EM otherwise should build for recharge to get ROA up as much as possible. I recently posted a AR/EM build (click my name for recent posts) that easy can be changed to Arch/EM.
Build-up + AIM + ROA + Explosive Arrow = dead mobs.
My Archery/Energy is set up for pure ranged blasting, with decent ranged defense and recharge. Archery plus Hover and Boost Range is very nice... you can generally avoid getting near enemies and still have a full attack chain. I tend to save melee for dealing with pesky mobs that manage to reach me since I don't like redraw.
Alternately, you can build for massive recharge and just pick up some modest ranged defense. That gives you Rain of Arrows + Aim or Build Up every spawn and pretty much means you aren't going to have many targets left to fight back. On the other hand, what is left is going to be the bosses and Lts so if you can manage at least some defense it would help.

Dear trolls,
I have received your posts. I will probably build for recharge for TFs. Thank you for the response.
Sincerely,
Me.
My Arch/nrg blaster almost never dies, mainly because she stays well out of normal weapon range. Yes, I put in ranged defense wherever that was an alternative, but honestly, I rarely died when I was level 30, too. I have a number of trollers and defenders who I worked really hard to get soft-capped defenses, but never considered it on Arch/nrg, because there was no need. Hover + range = robust health.
Took fire epic, so I have a hold if anyone gets silly, and bonfire if more of them get silly. Also, Rise of the Phoenix, which is so good I don't mind getting killed one bit - I think of it as a part of my offensive strategy. Sadly, I almost never die, and RotP is largely unused.
Went for recharge, incl spiritual alpha, as primary slotting goal. Next, ranged defense. RoA is up quickly, used once or twice a normal spawn, more if they are +4's or something stupid hard. And through it all, I'm still not dead. (darn it!)

Go into the AE look for a mission title fire cyborgs. Run it.
Dont think Fire Cyborg is possible without ranged defense, probably pretty easy with a non crashing ROA and capped ranged with Aid Self.
For grins I tried it with my Nrg/Nrg and died 2/3's through from a bad luck series of hits and Aid self not recharged. Thats with me just cycling Torrent and Explosive. If I had a third or fourth AOE, I imagine it would always be easy enough.
My blaster on settings 0/8 can run most of the ambush farms that have high ceilings, pretty close to my SS/Fire brutes speed. Add bosses or up the lvl and the gaps widens quite a bit. That said, I think playing my SS/Fire while fun at first, is quickly becomming a big bore. Odd, since I actually use more buttons than on my blaster. Shruggs, go figure.
Dear trolls
I have a Arch/EM blaster. Should I be building for rech or dmg or def set bonuses for end game? What are the priorities here?
Sincerely,
