CoH ran fine in Vista on ultra, crashing in Windows 7

CoH never crashed running on this machine in Vista, but now crashes frequently. Almost instantly on Port Oaks and Imperial City locks up during loading.

Windows 7 Pro SP1 32bit. AMD Phenom II X3 720 CPU 2.80 GHz. 4 GB RAM. GeForce 250 GTS. (275.33 driver). Gigabyte MA790X-UDP mainboard. No other cards installed.

When CoH lasts long enough while CTD-ing to create an error message they are corrupt file and fatal error messages, but the files are not corrupt. They run fine on the next reboot.

All other recent games run fine.

Edit: Need to mention I switched to Windows 7 when I-19 came out, so it may also be something changed in I-19.

How did you change from Vista to Win7?

Did you do a clean install by deleting the existing Windows directory, or did you use an upgrade disc?

Actually, that really doesn't matter.

Uninstall your nvidia drivers.

Then run driver sweeper: http://www.phyxion.net/item/driver-sweeper.html before you reboot the computer.

Then reinstall your Nvidia drivers.

That should fix your issue.

To think Vista was more stable.

I've had no issues with Windows 7 or Vista. Just with bad ATI or Nvidia Drivers.

Last month I did a clean install of Windows 7 Pro (full install) on a newly formatted hard drive. Service Pack 1 was updated through Windows Update. The problems started immediately (prior to SP 1 update) and the Nvidia driver version was 270.61 at that time.

I ran Driver Sweeper. The game ran long enough to say it had run out of memory, which is wierd with a 1 GB video card, so probably Nvidia needs to improve something. So I turned down some settings and game is running good again. Odd though that Vista could run CoH at higher settings than Windows 7.

No. Actually it's not weird.

You're running the 32-bit version of Vista.

So take the amount of memory you have on your video card and lop it off from system memory. Your 4GB just became 3GB, max.

Win7 and Vista both prefer to use between 1.5 and 2GB of RAM for the OS (with Vista having slightly lower requirements).

3-2=1GB.

The CoH client in normal operation at high resolutions can run up above 1GB of memory and can spike as high as 1.5GB before destabilizing. And if you're swapping heavily, chances are that it'll destabilize faster.

I hate to say it, but unless you have a device that simply doesn't have 64-bit support, you have no business running 32-bit versions of Windows anymore.

Granted, 64-bit Windows has higher memory requirements than 32-bit, but you're gaining back that entire 1GB that's being shadowed for your video card.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

I run too many programs that don't support 64 bit. That's going to continue for some time since the program developers no longer update.

There is a workaround where you go into the OS and change the amount of memory Windows sets aside for itself since it never uses all that. It's just hogging it. Don't need to do that yet though.

So with slightly lower graphic settings the game is running fine on all the original CoH maps, however, on the Incarnate missions, CoH crashes every 5 minutes. Usually during map loading, but sometimes just moving through interiors. I have graphics settings turned way down to lower than I ran them 7 years ago and particle count set to 100 (lowest) so it is not a memory issue unless it is a memory leak.

Need to mention my computer runs every other game at full settings, no problems ever, even though the memory demands for those games are much higher than CoH's ever get. So I think it never actually runs out of memory since Vista used more memory than Windows 7 does. It must just be hitting loading errors. I am going to try rolling the Nvidia drivers back to what I was using with Vista about a year ago.

Physical Memory (MB)

Total 3326
Cached 1807
Available 2528
Free 799

freespace on Hard drive: 549 GBs

So the game can't be using all the memory on lowest settings.
