The game ran out of memory and must now exit.

One can do a lot these days in game for hours on end without even being in the same room as the computer in question.

Be well, people of CoH.

I used to have the same problem on a Win XP 32-bit install with 4GB of RAM and on a Win7 64 install with 4GB of RAM (just upgraded OS, same hardware). I was on a Core 2 Dual Core CPU at the time with a Nvidia GPU, but I don't think that is relevant to the crash. I've since upgraded to a Quad Core Phenom with 8GB of RAM and I rarely, if ever, crash (same GPU).

For what it's worth, I've had multiple copies of the game running on this machine for 3-4 days before and each using 2.3-2.5GB of RAM by the time I closed them, still working fine. This was with the old launcher and the new NC Soft app, no differences in stability. I'm confident having that extra RAM cushion has made CoH much more stable.

This seems to be the case for me as well. The longer I play, the more likely I end up crashing.
