Forums won't play nice with proxies?

Okay, this has been irritating me for some time, so I thought I'd start a thread on it to see if it can get a little love and attention.

When I access the forums from home, I more-or-less don't have any problems. However, from work, where I access them from behind a proxy server, about half the time when I try to post something, I get the following error:

Quote:
Bad Input | Problème de saisie | Problem bei der Eingabe

We're sorry - the server could not accept your request. Often this is due to too many characters such as "><|--;="' being used. Please try removing these characters or reducing your post size. If you still experience problems please contact NA Customer Support or EU Customer Support using the subject line ?Issue with official website?.

I don't have anything particularly special in my posts, none of the "bad characters" they list. If I sit there and hit refresh and resend enough times, eventually it does go through. Usually it's after five or six tries. Sometimes, like now, it's after I sit here and hit it over and over for five minutes or longer, but eventually it does go through. The longer the message, it seems, the worse the problem is. This message was one of the ones that took me refreshing and resending around a hundred or more times to finally get it to post.

Doing a Google search on the error, it looks like it's a NCsoft-wide thing. I'm seeing reports of it on the City of Heroes, Aion, an Guild Wars sites.

You may want to alert your web services team that this is happening. If you want, I might be able to help troubleshooting by accessing the forums via our proxy and let you guys trace it to find out what's happening; however, since I don't have admin access to the proxy itself, I can only be the guinea pig who runs attempted postings that are affected. Let me know if you want me to do anything.

Gameplay / Technical Issues & Bugs Discuss gameplay / technical issues or bugs here! This is NOT a forum where official technical/QA support is available. For technical assistance email support@coh.com.
If you look at the heading at the top of the forum, you will see the text I quoted above.

Since you are asking for technical assistance, that would be the recommended course.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Are you surfing through a company proxy or a proxy to 'hide' your internet surfing habits?

If the latter, try https://libertybell.biz, it's an SSL proxy...works for/with the CoH forums

I'm not asking for technical assistance, it's not THAT important to me, and I don't want to deal with the standard, "Okay, we'll ponder it at some point" tech support reply. I'm simply reporting the problem, and offering my assistance is needed.

Sure looks like you are asking for assistance with it and that it IS apparently that important to you. If you don't want to deal with tech support and you only want to report the problem (as well as offer your assistance), PM one of the OCR team since they are in charge of the forums and they can direct it internally to whoever would be appropriate. Since this isn't a forum for official technical or QA support, it merely seems as if you are trying to blow your own horn by offering to help them solve the problem.

Mighty big of you to offer to help, although posting it here still seems as if you are trying to blow your own horn by offering to help. And it still sounds as if you are asking for technical assistance, no matter what your second post stated.

What is your malfunction? What difference does this make to you? Is there any particular reason you think you know better what is in the mind of TonyV, the exact level of concern for which I feel for this problem, than I do? Is there any particular reason you don't want this problem resolved?

Do I hope they resolve the issue? Of course, duh. Do I need technical assistance? No, the problem isn't on my end, I'm pretty sure it's on theirs. Even if it's on my end, since I don't have admin access to our proxy at work, I can't do anything about it anyway, but obviously other people are having the problem as well and I thought they'd want to know.

So to summarize, this is a technical issue. I put it out there for discussion. I don't particularly want to deal with technical support, and I don't personally need technical assistance. So how should I bring up the subject? If only there were, I don't know, maybe a forum where technical issues could be discussed, issues where you don't particularly need official support...

And the reason I offered assistance is because I've troubleshot problems like this myself; where someone says, "x is broken," you can't replicate it, and you have no starting point from which to fix it. I'm not offering to drive to Austin, Texas (where the servers are hosted) and fix it for them. I'm merely saying that if they need to coordinate with me to access the site so that they can narrow the bazillion of packets that don't have problems down to the 10 or 20 that do, let me know and I'll give them more info and I can access the site while they run a trace or something. How that got turned into some ulterior dark motive to, I don't know, make myself look better?, I haven't a clue.

And this thread has officially exceeded the amount of time and effort I wanted to spend on it by 28 minutes and 41 seconds. If you don't have anything constructive to add, I won't be responding.

Sometimes the forum cop routine serves a purpose, like when someone is actually breaking rules and might induce others to unknowingly doing the same.

Not really seeing the point in your posts, though.

Do you know if your proxy IP is international or a state far from your own? Judging by the symbols it listed as a warning it looks like a spam flag is being thrown at your message(since they're url symbols) ie: the server thinks your account coming from that location is spam/fraud(stolen account?) etc.

It's a rather long list. Not at all suitable for this forum.

Not really.

I've now posted from behind two different businesses proxies with no problems. This is along with one of them involving a content filter as well as the proxy.

Right. And we all know that because one person can't reproduce a problem, that means it doesn't exist.

That wasn't anywhere close to what I said. I merely reported the results of my testing and that I was unable to reproduce it. I also mentioned that one of the networks uses a content filter as well as a proxy.

Tony apparently wanted me to post something constructive, so I did. I tested what he was reporting to the best that I could and reported the results of the test. Are you saying we are only supposed to report testing results if they were the same as his?

I appreciate the friends I have locally that allowed me to use their networks to perform the tests, especially since one of them did so outside of normal working hours. Apparently people actually testing things and reporting the results isn't good enough for some people on the forums, so if all you are going to do is take potshots at someone that actually tries to test what is reported then I won't bother with the tests I was going to try on another network running a proxy.

For what it's worth, I didn't say anything.

My company, by the way, uses Bluecoat web proxies. I think there might be load balancers involved too. Given how weirdly complex our setup is, I'm surprised I don't have more problems like this, but most sites seem to work without much trouble. I don't know if the make/model of the proxy has anything to do with it.

Also, it only seems to happen with lengthy posts. The longer the post, the more chance it has of failing. Also, the longer the post, the more times I have to hit refresh and resubmit before it will post correctly.
