Assault Rifle/Energy Manipulation

So, this is what my GF decided on when we rolled out a bunch of characters for her. She's big into FPS games and it just clicked I guess. The problem is I'm having a tough time trying to build my scrapper and SoA, and I have no idea how to even begin to construct a character for her. I just want to keep it simple and easy right now. She wants to eventually dive into zones and the arena (CoH+Counter=Strike = win) and I have no idea how the new PvP works or if these sets are viable, so, yeah, I'm pretty much lost.

A big advantage she will have is Boost Range, which will allow her to start shooting enemies from outside the normal range (as well as make teleportation very useful). Energy Manipulation is a nice power for Blappers, but the Assault nuke and other AoEs are not very useful compared to some of the other powersets even if you can get the enemies lined up in the cone. She'll want to focus on survivability, since melee moves like Bone Smasher will be so tempting. A scrapper is not a good pairing for such a character in the normal game, an empath works will, but a Blapper can run with other support characters as well. That build is excellent for taking out a single foe, but not as good at doing a blaster's traditional job of decimating an entire spawn.

/Energy is useful in PvP because of the high magnitude stuns (at the cost of range) and attacks, but Assault has always felt less powerful to me then some of the other powersets.

Ar/EM is not a very good toon for her to start off PvPing with. She chose the best secondary and one of the worst primaries. If you are not too far into lvling it up you should convince her to change it to a Psi/EM.
So my recommendation would be for her and you to first check the PvP forums and look at the threads about blaster builds and and questions there about all things PvP and if Dahjee answers any of those questions...well lets just say don't listen to the answer.

I agree with this. Recently I have been very bored with this game that I just started bringing my toons to RV PvP. I think I might have killed one other player that was half dead already. That was with my Archer EM toon which is similar to your AR EM. But beyond that I have been killed a zillion times over. You really need the right archtype, Right powers from the archtype, and the right build.

Though AR EM is very nice with the range and AOE powers from AR. You can definitely get Range capped and have Aid self for PvE reasons.

Absolutely. You are 100% correct. I only posted it to provide some thoughts on the AR/EM topic that might be of use to others who see the title. My build would be useless in PVP
