Anyway I can use a Fir Bolg as a hostage in a Hellion based mission?

WHenever I try and do this I get the message saying something like the two need to be in the same level range.

Is there any way to get around this or should I start trying to make my own tiny little pumpkin headed spindly body creature?

You'll probably have to make your own if you keep getting the orange message. Then again, if he's NOT a combat ally, it still might work; sometimes the MA ignores such things past giving you the message, so if it lets you load up the mission, give it a spin and see what happens.

First you have to manually set the level of the mission to the level you want it to be (if you're using Hellions, you'd set the minimum level to 1 and the maximum to 15 I think). It's under "mission properties." Then it'll allow you to place critters of any level, although using a Fir Bolg, even as a non-combatant, will place the "Higher level enemies appearing at a lower level than design intent" message in your arc description.

Yaaa that so totally worked. Now off to write a half baked story that will receive, if I am lucky, 7 runs.
