Troubleshooting

Q. My Mac client won't start up again after being started previously. The icon just bounces once and disappears.

A. If your Mac game client won't start after playing it previously, try the following steps:

1. Open your Applications folder, and then Utilities.
2. Launch Activity Monitor.
3. Look for a process called "wineserver" and click it once to select it.
4. Click "Force Quit".
5. Launch the CoH game client again.

Q. I just downloaded the Mac client and it won’t launch.

A. Try this:

- Make sure you're installing using an account with administrator access (do not use the Guest account)
- Open Safari and select Empty Cache from the Safari menu.
- Open Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal) and type or paste "dscacheutil -flushcache" (without the quotes of course) and press Return.
- Go to Users > (your name) > Library > Preferences and throw the City of Heroes Preferences in the trash.

Q. I'm using MacOS X Tiger (10.4.x). Can I play CoH anyway?

A. CoH will refuse to launch, as it's set to require at least 10.5.8. You can work around it, but I'm not going to cover how, because it probably will crash.

Q. Should I upgrade to Leopard or Snow Leopard?

A. Snow Leopard is your best bet for future support from both Paragon Studios and from Apple.

Q. If I have a problem and I'm asked for my Console Log, how do I get that?

A. Open Applications > Utilities > Console. You can copy and paste text from it.

Q. When will Depth of Field and other special effects be added?

A. Soon™.

Q. How do I ask questions or get help with my Mac or CoH Mac Edition?

A. The City of Heroes official Forums has a separate category for Mac users. You aren't required to post there as a Mac user, but it will give your post direct attention from fellow Mac users who can help.

Additional issue solution for the NCSoft Launcher and patches failing:

If you have Crossover or Crossover Games installed you may have to manually change the location of the game client. Crossover seems to fool the NC Launcher's auto-search feature.

You do that by expanding the little triangle next to "City of Heroes" in the NCSoft Launcher, and then double-clicking Properties. If the game location doesn't look right (it would be really long if it's pointing to Crossover) click Browse and change it to the right location.

After that, patching will work properly.

I havent seen this anywhere so was wondering, with the new NC launcher for mac users how do we run multiple instances of coh? For windows launcher they have an advanced option in settings that enables them to run multiple instances but couldnt help but see that the mac version doesnt have that advanced function option. Usually b4 the launcher I would just duplicate my coh application and be able to run 2 instances fine. But now when I do that when i click the duplicated application it launches the first one I have running already. So has any1 found a way around this or are we currently waiting for a fix to this?

Multiple instances -

Hi Cuppa. I have tried the separate folders approach but it doesn't seem to be working so I must be doing something wrong. In each case I have made sure that the paths are set to the correct folders, but when I go to open the second instance, the game window that is already running simply pops up.......do I need to have the folders in separate places i.e. one in applications and one on desktop?

Here are the steps to begin multiple instances of CoH. I have taken what Kuppa said and put a little more info to help.

-Create a folder on the desktop and name it NC Soft
-Drag and drop the NCLauncher.app icon (from Desktop or Applications) into the folder
-Drag and drop the City of Heroes.app icon (from Applications) into the folder
-Run the Launcher to make sure the game still runs
-if it does (and it should), close everything down
-Right Click on the NC Soft folder and DUPLICATE (Once duplication is complete, the new folder should be called “NC Soft copy”)
-Open “NC Soft copy”
-Run the Launcher
-Under “Installed”, click the drop down button for “City of Heroes”
-Click “Properties”
-Ensure the “Install Location” has “…/Desktop/NC Soft copy/City of Heroes.app”

Two run two instances, Open the “NC Soft” and “NC Soft copy” folders and run the launchers! You should be in bidness!

Thanks Nuclear. I tried that method and still no luck. When I go to open the second instance of CoH from the copy folder it still default opens the window of CoH that is already running.

I was able to run two instances on my Mac prior to this whole "NCSoft Launcher" business....

Ok you'll have to run one instance using the Launcher. Once the instance is up, you'll have to change the install location to run the other instance. My two locations are below. Each time you run the instances you'll have to change the install location.

.../Desktop/NC Soft/City of Heroes.app

.../Desktop/NC Soft copy/ City of Heroes.app

I have both running as we speak! Hopefully this helps ya!
