Help with CLAWS

After purchasing the new Animal Pack, I thought I would try a Claws/Regen Scrapper. OMG - what a pain! True, endurance isn't a problem BUT your heals are clicks, you don't have status protection around level 10 when you really start needing it, and you have nothing that makes you harder to hit or reduces incoming damage. I actually find myself stocking up on Green Inspirations just so I can survive.

Anyone have suggestions for another animal-type character with Claws that is better? I can't see an animal with Fire or Electric, maybe SR/WP/Invuln etc.

And which would be better synergy: Brute, Scrapper, or Tank?

If you don't like Regen, look at Willpower.

And this would probably be better in the Archetypes forum, as well.

(Also, there are no claws tanks.)

All heals except one are clicks. Every single heal in the game - except the heal-over-time toggle that Pain Dom Corruptors have - is a click power.

Regeneration, on the other hand, can be any kind of power - auto, click, or toggle.

Use tactics and strategy for six more levels; I promise you, it won't take that long. City leveling is stupid-fast.

Fight pool for resistance, Maneuvers/CJ/Hover/Fight/set bonuses for defense. Though honestly, later on, you don't really need it.

Honestly, my level 50 claws/regen scrapper (who only has pretty minimal defense and next to no resistance) pretty much never dies unless she accidentally takes too large an alpha attack. And even then, she's back up immediately because of the self-rez. I change all my green and blue insps into reds.

Really, you need to give powersets longer than level 10 to know how they perform. Pretty close to nothing performs well at level 10.

Claws LOOKS the same for scrappers and brutes, but because of mechanical differences between their inherent powers, some of the numbers got tweaked for brutes when they got it. My opinion is probably not universal, but I like the brute version much better. On top of that, if you go the Willpower route Bill suggested, that favors brutes too; the numbers are the same for scrappers and brutes, but since regen and +hp powers are based off your max HP and brutes have higher HP, those powers give brutes more benefit.

I think it's funny that the thread is about Regen but the title says "Help with CLAWS."

Well, the OP wanted a secondary to pair with claws, since Regen didn't work for them. So the title isn't really inaccurate in any way.

/WP will definitely keep you going. In my opinion it's actually what regen should be.

+1. Brutes get better returns on /wp. Spin on a brute is just really good and it's a rare case where on paper a scrapper should be better with the set, but it's not clear cut.

I'll second the notion to grind out 6 more levels for Integration. One of the best powers in the game!
Truthfully, I never noticed a need for status protection before level 18-22.
Not sure what your fighting that's giving you trouble, maybe Vahz?

Regen, is a mixed bag. When your on top of your game theres nothing like it. Regen can pull off some amazing comebacks. But if your attention is off, or your tired... You'll be kissing carpet like Blasters.

That said; I personally found Claws/Regen to be rather... weak feeling.
I don't judge a combo before level 22 and SO's. But when my Claws/Regen started feeling weaker after SO's for some reason, I just shelved him and moved on. Perhaps it's just perception, having played Dark Melee and Broadsword I'm just used to more upfront damage. Claws just feels weak to me. I was tempted to roll a new one up when I bought the Animal Pack, until I realized you still couldn't have 'natural' claws.

For synergy with Claws on a scrapper I'd look at either WP or SR.

I had the same issues with /regen. When I chose my stalker lizard Snappy I went with /sr and am now enjoying rushing through tips at lvl 43. I think it fits animal toons very well cause they are good at dodging. Of course I'm not saying /wp is a bad choice.

/sr is a good combination with claws and was my first 50. However /sr doesn't get strong till later levels so I didn't mention it.

Regen is the weakest secondary because it used to be god mode and when it got nerfed it got over nerfed. There was a point where every new issue would have a new regen nerf.

Vahz don't really mez. They hit hard and due toxic damage and those are what really drive melee ATs nuts early on. Lost and CoT will mezz a lot and can be found even before level 10.

This is "back in the day," but my Claws/regen outsoloed any build I had done and likely have done since once it hit 18 due to Focus. It's the only build I was openly willing to try Invinc diff setting when there was such an option. Getting SOs just made it all the more awesome. Once Claws 2.0 happened it was just pure glee. No more wind up attack and it was built for the high DPS set it was hyped to be. Just note this was after /regen had gone through the worst of it's nerfs.

Claws 3.0 added in the animation fixes that other weapon sets got, but Focus got nerfed and to be honest I'm rather lukewarm on the change. It's the only weapon set who's animations got tweaked that had something nerfed in the process and it felt like it changed what the set was about.

Dark was a DPS set(see Dark/elec brute buzzsaw builds), but then it got changed. I still don't view it as a heavy hitter though. BS is well, BS. It's always hit like a mack truck, but I find the set mind numbingly slow.
