DM/SD is very popular and is regarded as one of the best scrapper combos out there.
The top scrapper times on the Rikti Pylon Challenge are mostly DM/SD.

There's about a bazillion topics about DM/SD. For quite a long time, half of the "look at my build" threads were about DM/SD. In other words, yes it's a good combo, and yes it's arguably better on scrappers due to much higher damage from SD/AAO.
DM/SD is arguably the most powerful scrapper pairing in game right now. The sets complement each other perfectly. Siphon life is worth ~40-45 hp/sec regen in the standard MG Sm SL Sm attack chain. Saturated aao + soul drain grants ~9-10 small reds worth of damage bonus and can be perma'd. Combined with the rebirth destiny, it's very very tough. Shield charge really does a good job of covering for the lack of aoe. I still have fire sword circle envy, but I'll trade the aoe capability for the hp regen and higher single target damage happily - it's not for everyone, though.
When I rolled mine I didn't really think it was going to become this unstoppable juggernaut of "slaaaay" I just figured siphon life would cover for the lack of self healing, cause I was really tired of taking aid self on my scrappers. Guess I sort of blundered into the combo, but it's been a ton of fun so far.
It has very good survivability, excellent single target DPS, and you can get passable AoE by combining Shield Charge with an epic AoE like Fire Ball if you really want. It's the AV soloist of choice for many people.

Dark/Shield Build Thread
I see a lot about Fire or Elec paired with SD, maybe Claws. Have I just been missing the conversations about Dark/SD? They seem to complement each other so well. Dark provides a Healing factor that SD lacks. SD provides an AoE that Dark lacks. Their combo Dam bonus is amazing. It won't help much against hard single targets, but Dark is already nasty there. Is there a hole that I'm missing? Is it worth going Brute for the extra HP/Heal factor, or would that be a total waste of the Soul Drain/AAO combo? Thanks!
