Scrapper Suggestions Please

Hello Scrappers!!!

So you can tell from my global name this forum is foreign to me. I've been playing for many years on CoH and have never ever been able to get a scrapper past lvl 25. Maybe I didnt give them a chance? IDK.

So I want to make a scrapper and get her to 50!! Things I know for sure...I do NOT like: broadsword (to slow), MA (just not my style), Spines (just didnt like it).

I recently got my first damage melee toon to 50. She is a ele/shield brute and i LOVE her. So pretty much don't want to repeat that combo for a scrapper.

My favorite 50's to play include: trollers: ice/kin, mind/bubbles. fenders: emp/psi, 3D, rad/rad. corr: ice/thermal, dark/kin.

As far as money goes. NO i will not be investing in purples for this toon. I will however have the money to invest in some great sets!

Bring on the suggestions!

katana/wp, katana/inv, dm/inv, dm/wp.

These are my favorite combinations for very survivable, but not extremely difficult (build-wise or playstyle wise), setups. My actual favorite setup is katana/regen, but that's probably not what you're looking for.

From your toon list, however, it seems you (aside from that emp) like toons with a lot of AoE potential, that's something you won't really find in a dm, and while katana has a large cone and decent AoE, the radii aren't very large (compared to what you're probably used to), so you may find yourself wanting something bigger. Katana is one of those great sets than has a good AoE attack chain, however. That's not something you can get in most sets.

I'm currently leveling a kin melee/fire scrap and it's a blast to play. not sure how it'll do in the late game though. katana/ dark, fire, or regen is great too as divine avalanche covers for a lot of the defense problems (parry in bs does too but katana is faster and imo more fun). soul mastery's shadow meld helps a lot too.

Hi Vix!

Regen is probably the hardest secondary to play; it's very reactive, and has number of click powers that you'll need to keep track of as well your attacks. WP is the easiest, it's all toggles and auto; just turn stuff on when you log in and start killing. I tend to stay away from SR and SD, because I really don't like clicky mez protection. Invuln, DA, FA and Elec fall in the middle, difficulty-wise. Invuln is tougher, FA and DA have extra offense and/or control, Elec has a damage aura and End management tools. DA also has arguably the best self-heal in the game, though it requires a to hit check.

DM is probably my favorite primary. Very good single target damage, faster and less bursty then BS. It's also got a self-heal/attack hybrid (Siphon Life) that goes right into your attack chain, an End Boost, and Soul Drain instead of Build-Up (less boost, longer duration).

Elec is not really any different on a scrapper than it is on a brute.

Katana is mainly a faster, weaker version of BS. If you liked the concept of Broadsword but it was too slow, Kat's a good set to try.

Claws is a good fast set, but if it was the gameplay of Spines that you didn't like (as opposed to the aesthetics) you may not like Claws, either.

Fire, Kin and Dual Blade I'm kinda of meh on. Nothing bad, but nothing that has really grabbed me yet either.

You might also want to check out some of the alternate animations for MA, to see if they appeal to you more.

Hope this helps, grab me in game if you have any questions

Sad that this was once the total opposite.

I like secondaries that are self sufficient. Which to me is anything with a self heal, and help with end management. I have found that in the past years I have had the most fun with /DA and /EleA because they seem to stand on their own.

Primary for me is about style! All scrapper primaries are good, but what looks the coolest while being good? KM and DB have a ton of style. YMMV

Depends on what turned you off with Spines. If it was the icky factor instead of the mix of ranged/PBAoE/Single-target, you might like the vaguely similar Claws. Claws has great AoE and is a fast, moderately flashy set.

After reading all the input I decided to roll a DM/INV scrapper. I am enjoying the play so far and am now scanning the forums for builds. Thank you very much for the help! I'll keep ya posted on if i get her to 50!

Great choice. DM can be a very fun set, and is one of the few primaries I have played into the 40s more than once.

I'm sure you will have fun with that toon. I have a DM/Reg in the mid 40s that I enjoy. When I first saw your post I was going to say something about Ele/SD Scrapper since I just got mine to 50 last night and he is a BEAST, but then I read you had a Brute with the same build.

BAss is like, the face of dm/inv (in my head at least). While it's a moderately creepy face, it's one you can trust to get you results. dm/inv is a very good set.

I'm curious to know how Spines and Claws have a similar gameplay to them.
