Leveling up builds

Are there any pages out there on how to slot while going through the process of leveling? Specificaly for an electric/shield scrapper. At level 20 now. Is it worth even bothering with IO's at all?

A level 24 dual IO gives you numbers a shade above +3 SO. For attacks, this means you can grab 3 from one set and three from another and get +3 SO level perfomance in acc, end, recharge, and 3 slotted damage if a power is 6 slotted all the while at least some decent bonuses. Not a lot of attacks are 6 slotted at 21 mind you, but the end, or recharge aspect can come later. For more basic slotting like in a defense set, you'll need to up grade the def IOs to smooth out the numbers, but likely not that much. Likely a level 35 IO would be enough.

Point is, yes, it's beneficial to slot IOs even early. Even if it's not the most uber way of slotting, it cuts down on having to reslot versus what you need to do with SOs and once it's done, you'll likely be saving up for when you do switch over to a more pimped out build. I'm actually working on slotting out three level 12 builds via frankenslotting. Even if it's only for 9, or so levels, I'll likely solo my way there so those last longer in terms of game time, and I don't think I have spent more than 2 mill if that doing so.

Actually, here's my level 12 KM/sd.

EDIT: The other slot for the def toggles would be a GotA: Def for both since you get +2% recovery from two slotting the set.

I don't bother with sets until I'm 50 and I've decided I like the character enough to keep playing and I've planned out a good build. But if you're sure you'll want to keep playing, and you have a build already planned, and you have the influence, and you like to examplar down, then go ahead and start slotting your sets in the 30s. The difference in enhancement values isn't so large that you'll be gimping yourself by starting early with lower level IOs.

I do start frankenslotting in the mid 30s or so. At that point I respec into my end game attack chain and frankenslot to get the necessary recharge and pick up as much endurance reduction as possible at the same time. That helps to afford all the toggles I like to run at that level and above.

Below that level, I stick with SOs. Unless I have something specific I'm after, attacks get slotting priority, aiming for one accuracy, one recharge, one endurance, and three damage. In toggles, one endurance reducer and two or three of what the toggle is for. Before SOs, I slot mostly accuracy and endurance reduction in attacks, and basically don't slot my toggles. They tend to get the default slot while I focus on offense.

I do recommend picking up a Kismet unique and Steadfast Protection unique as soon as you can afford them and have a place to slot them. I think they're worth it on almost any build.

I'll slot sets early if the ones I want to slot happen to be ones that cap near the level I'm at. Example: I'll start slotting Eradication at level 27, and Kinetic Combat at level 32, because the cap on those sets is level 30 and 35 respectively.

As far as leveling builds goes, I usually pick whatever I feel like I need at the time, with some exceptions like taking mez protection as soon as it's available or the tier 9 attack at 32.

I'll sometimes plan out a build in advance, but that's the exception rather than the rule. I may find out while playing the character that my planned build isn't as much fun as I thought it would be.

I start slotting set IOs at level 7. A triple IO level 17 is comparable to a +0 SO and it never expires. Anything above that is just gravy.

Lots of the low-level ones can be bought cheap in recipe form, and if you get drops they're always worth crafting.

When I get higher I use by second build to create a "final" layout and I put the stuff I plan to keep at 50 into it slowly as I get the money or drops. This way I have a build that works and has good numbers but with a mishmash of IOs from all different levels, and a second final build and I can just focus on enjoying the character.

Best of both worlds. =) We have two (now three) builds, might as well use 'em.

I personally IO gradually and go for an SO/IO mix until my character is fully IO'd. So at level 22 my build would be 20% IO'd, 80% SO'd. At level 27 it would be 30% IO'd, 70% SO'd, and so on.

The biggest reason you shouldn't slot IOs early is that they don't make much of a difference until you get an entire build together. There are some exceptions, like knockback protection for some power sets that lack it, and +recovery uniques. The most sought-after bonuses are recharge and defense. It is difficult to obtain a meaningful amount of either of those until you have reached 50 and have all of your slots and powers available.

If you have the INF and time, go for it and slot some IO sets. You can respec later to fix your build if you decide on something else when you hit 50.
