Best secondary pool for kinetic melee?

So I'm playing a KM/SR brute, and I just hit lvl 10.

I'm noticing I seem pretty damn squishy for a brute, and I get in trouble fighting enemies one level above me.

Is there a better setup for Kinetic Melee brutes? Which secondary works best for them?

I havent played CoH/CoV in over a year so I don't know all the changes that were made, other than the new power types and they made fitness something everyone gets.

/SR is squishy until you get to SOs

To be completely honest, any set based on defense will always feel squishy until slotted with SOs. Especially when there's no heal available. SR especially, since its other form of mitigation, the scaling resists, are incomplete until at least the mid 20s as well.

Early game defense sets rely heavily on being able to defeat before defeating and pop heals to keep going.

As a Brute, your best defense will be keeping Fury up as much as possible and keeping a lot of oranges and greens in your tray (and purples, but the problem usually is that your defense is being debuffed, and again at low level, your def debuff resist isn't enough yet). With Fury at a mid-to-high level, enemies shouldn't be lasting long enough to land enough consecutive hits to be a major issue, and otherwise you just need to keep from being debuffed much.

If you're playing Praetorian to start, the enemies are tougher than hero or villain side to start due to buffs and debuffs.

Stick with it, it'll be a good combo post SO.

Starting Praetorian, I found the missions easier as a control-type character rather than a melee type character, simply due to the make-up of the enemies, but it'll matter less later.

Anything with resistance will synergize well; the -Damage components will layer on top of your resistances.
I know there was talk on the scrapper forum of KM/sd not being an ideal pairing, but it does stack +dmg/-dmg and gives KM another AoE. The only thing I dislike about mine early so far is the one handed animations.

On teams the energy attacks can really rip a lowbie melee apart. The super zombie monkey bosses, or whatever the hell they are can do jaw dropping damage with their double fisted attack. Being on a team facing a +2 version of one makes me thankful for any support that is on the team.

Saying that, /sr is always playing a game of rolling dice. During lower levels, those dice are rather weighted against you. My motto when playing a /sr is to say, "And I'll never suck that bad again" whenever I ding a level. You will forever be at the mercy of dice rolls, but higher up /sr really becomes a nice set.

I recently made a Kinetic/Willpower Brute. Just by hunting I made it to level 8 in less than a day. Kinetic melee provides a ridiculous amount of attack power, and willpower provides a huge amount of defense and also Regen.

By level six I only had the auto-run Health power and the Auto-run Defense power. Along with just this and kinetic melee I was able to scrap groups of 4+ reds at only level six and have my health never drop below 50%, not to mention also having my defense powers unslotted.

I would recommend willpower with 10000% guarantee that you'll be satisfied!

Super Reflexes is a great set, but it's like joining a fraternity. It'll haze you real good when you're a pledge, just to test your commitment. If you stick with it, you become one of the brothers and enjoy the frat house's 52 inch LDC, 'fridge always stocked with beer and free stripper night. Tough early game, fantastic late game.

Also, judging any powerset negatively at level 10 is a bit harsh. Even Willpower and Invulnerability can feel weak in the single-digits.

You'll be breezing through missions set for 8 in the late game, if you stick with it.

Super Reflexes' scaling resists go very well with the -Damage of Kinetic Melee. A softcapped KM/SR Brute is going to be one of the most survivable Brutes you can roll.

I always forget that SR has scaling resistances. Thanks for reminding me.

Well... I actually have a KM/Stone Armor brute that is probably THE most survivable brute you could roll.

Lvling can be a pain if you don't have a regular balanced group you team with, but granite is oh so worth it. With Tough I have +85% Resistance to S/L and 60% to everything else. you will have to invest in some sets like Kinetic Combat and Luck of the Gambler, but I absolutely love KM and Stone is such a sturdy build.

If you can overcome the -rech and -movt speed you are golden.

Don't worry, SR is one of the most misunderstood melee armor sets in the game. I've seen people say it's bad, then I look at their builds and see they've done things like put off Dodge until level 41 (yes, someone actually did that!)

It's probably the single most underrated melee armor in the game.

I happily stipulate the fact KM/Stone is going to be more survivable, and is the most survivable Brute of all with the possible exception of DM/Stone. But I will note the damage output of KM/SR will be superior, along with very respectable survivability. And it lets you see your costume.

P.S. Due to the nature of SR, it will conditionally outlive any other secondary, and conversely it will conditionally be the squishiest secondary as well. Some people don't like this trade-off, they prefer something reliable and consistent (who can blame them? But personally I find the uncertainty thrilling.) but for me those glory moments are well worth the embarrassing moments (and the glory moments outnumber the embarrassing ones as you finalize your build at 50-- primaries like Dark Melee and Kinetic Melee help to minimize the low-points even further).
