"In places" should not be used as a synonym for "several thousand-page tomes in sequence." Seriously, books six and seven started to wander, and eight, nine and ten were kudzu plotting in need of editing and some mass murder of excess Aes Sedai.

I was done with the series after Crossroads of Twilight, which managed to run in circles and not advance a single plot thread. Perhaps I'll get back to it once Sanderson's done.

Aesthetics is always an area of much debate, both for and against artists of all stripes and caliber. You do have to make sure you're in the realm of aesthetics and not simple clarity or unity of writing.
I'd agree with you if the complaint was about writing style. The complaint was about content. Since I don't know the whole story, there's no way that I (or anyone) can read Feast of Crows and know what's important and what's not. I suspect it's all important.

It's my pet peeve that someone reads something they don't like and just say "he needed a better editor", or something like that. You don't like a book, fine. But don't suppose that what came out isn't exactly what was wanted or needed.

The latest Robin Hobb duology (Dragon Keeper) and Justin Cronin's The Passage are recent books that I also see a lot of people complaining about their pacing and content. And again I couldn't disagree more.
The Passage seemed fine to me; it's a big book that covers a lot of ground, but I didn't feel that it dragged, really.

I can see someone enjoying the WoT "as is" if they loved the world enough. For me, when we had Mat Cuathon disappearing for more than a whole book, I thought the story was just unbalanced, and focusing on minutia I didn't care about and that didn't seem relevant to the story.

Perhaps it's what Martin wanted, but unless you're James Joyce and experimenting with the form, there's no need to be so repetitive.

There will be cries of "broken record" and such, but damnit, I want the awesome of book 2 back, not the bloated shovelwords that the story turned into.
