Kindle.

Morning All,


Im just reading up about the Amazon Kindle and wanted to know what all you thought?

I'm not a book worm but I do like to read. what i want to know;
is it laggy?
feel plastic?
feel cheap?

worth it?

We bought my mum one for her birthday last year and she loves it. She lives in China and I believe the 3G version allows her some unrestricted internet access. As for it's perfomance, I don't know sorry and I'm not sure my mum could explain it very well.

A friend of mine (yes I have one) bought one and swears by it.

I absolutely love mine, use it every day; love it so much I bought my wife one (on the same account so we can share books).

I bought a Sony pocket reader a year or so ago, which I took on holiday; I spent so much time reading I ran out of my premade list. When the Kindle 3 came out I was very close to the front of the queue - the device was a real upgrade in terms of features. I gave my Sony to my 7 year old daughter, but she'd rather sneak my wife's kindle and use that, so she'll be getting her own next birthday.

The only downside is that a lot of paperbacks aren't that much cheaper as ebooks - but there are lots of free and self-published books around, and you do save shelf space.

I have both a Kindle and an iPad (which I mainly use for reading digital comics and watching BBC iPalyer) - if I had to choose, I'd honestly pick the Kindle.

The Kindle 3 is definitely worth it, if you want a dedicated reader. We have 2. There are rumors of a Kindle 4 for some point this year, and of a price cut, so you might want to wait.

I use the android kindle app on my phone, so many free books to choose from!!

@Cambo, I have the Kindle app for my iPhone but I couldn't get on with it. I think the screen was just too small.

Estimated delivery date on my kindle is Friday!!!

Can you also read txt files like fanfics and the like too on a Kindle? Just curious, or is it just ebooks only?

kindle is both a device and a service... buying the device gives you the service, but you can also sign up for the service without the device

if you have an ipod touch/iphone/ipad you can also use kindle to download the books to your mobile device.
it's pretty much the same concept as an ipad only different design, it's not very laggy as books are downloaded, not streamed so it might be a lil laggy while downloading but after that its smooth sailing.

The average book takes less than a minute to download, there's no 'lag'; you buy a book, download and read it.

I tend to have the WiFi switched off by default because it eats the battery for no good reason; I only turn it on to download books and sync with other devices (I can get up to page x on my Kindle then later pick up at page x on the PC or iPad - pretty cool).

I have the cover with the built-in light, which was a little pricey, but i don't regret a penny - so good for reading in bed, no batteries to replace! (It's powered directly by the kindle.)

You can read .txt files on a Kindle easily - you can view PDFs on there too, but to be honest I wouldn't recommend it, scrolling and zooming is pretty poor; that's where the iPad shines.

You can email text files to your kindle - there's a free (WiFI, not 3G) email address on each device...and i'm starting to sound like a salesman, so I'm done.

its amazing, so light, doesn't feel cheap at all the books are sooooo easy to read it is actually like reading a book but slimmer and lighter, and you can take 90,000 with you on holiday without taking 2 suitcases the only bad thing that it has is that you can't smell that new book smell... but i can always do without that
