Credit Card Fraud

Last year I set-up a secondary checking account to act as a filter when I need to pay something online.
I don't use it much. Main thing I use it for is NCSoft purchases. Haven't used it for anything other than NCSoft purchases for months.
Purchased the animal pack when it came out.
Call from the bank today (just a couple of days later) that someone is trying to use the card for purchases out of the country.
I'm not liking the coincidence.
So I'm posting in case others have had fraud issues since purchasing the animal pack.
I'm going to the Customer Service site to report it now.

I've had fraud issues with my card for purchasing anything City related the FIRST time it happens because NCSoft comes up as an overseas company (since the store is either US or Korean). I've had at least two cards put on hold because of the small booster prices being charged even though it was me both times.

I'd check with your bank/card handler as well, especially if you've had a new card issued recently. Mine tend to reset the 'favourites' when they issue a new one.

Having worked in the business, debit card fraud claims, you never know where a web site has their physical point of transaction.

What is worse, some banks (some very evil greedy banks) cough*BofA*cough charge you a percent of the transaction as an 'out of country' fee (not to change currency thats even more - simply because the transaction is out of country) and then tell the customer it is mandated by visa (though I never saw actual proof of that and I took a $500 visa regulations class).

Actually, I recently re-upped my sub, NCSoft was located in Texas this time, and then I got an extra, fraudulent, charge for WoW (which I haven't played in years) on an account also in Texas... Said WoW account was, apparently, insta-banned for gold-selling spam.

So it's not just an over-seas issue. However, thanks for posting this, because, up to now, I'd presumed that CoX/NCSoft was secure. I'll be having a chat with them about that.

By call from the bank today do you mean somebody from the bank actually called and asked for you? Or do you mean that you got an automated message that said your account was being locked down for suspicious activity and press 1 to speak to a representative? Because if it's the latter then it's a telephone phishing scam.

How would you know that?

Okay, I bought the Animal Pack last week too. *YAY!*
I DID notice some suspicious behavior on my account Friday. *Uh oh!*
Turns out it was just Uncle Sam trying to give me back some of the cash he extorted from me in the last year. *YAY!*

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

VISA does charge a tiny amount for cross-border and/or currency exchange fees for each transaction. The transactions sent to the bank are flagged as one or both but no amount is actually added to your transaction. The bank gets the fee on their invoice later which is the sum of all the pennies charged during the bill cycle for that.

The financial institution obviously has the right to pass that through to the customer but it isn't "mandated" by Visa. It is much more likely for the big banks to pass it on (more than they were actually charged usually) than smaller community banks or credit unions due to the bigger exposure those banks have to international customers.

Sorry, didn't mean to get off topic but thought I'd answer your question there.

Because Blizzard e-mails you when they lock your account, with a reason for the ban and actions you may be able to take to recover it. Happened to me, too, and the account had been inactive for over 12 months - WoW isn't even installed on my current computer.

No problems with NCSoft, though. I'm sorry to hear some of you are having issues here as well.

Keep in mind it is quite possible that you have a key logger on your machine and any info you may have input could have been used by someone illegally. Making sure your system is secure and checked regularly is vital in today's computer driven society. There's just too many scumbags out there ready and waiting to steal from you.

It wasn't fraud related to a NCSoft purchase.
I made an NCSoft purchase of the animal pack when it came out ... and then ... fraudlent charges started showing up on Saturday.

The Fraud Prevention people told me that the NCSoft purchase was showing up as being in country. I have never had problems with NCSoft purchases. It was showing up as an in-country purchase - USA.

This was just odd because the fraudulent charges showed up not long after the NCSoft purchase of the Animal pack. Before that I used it to get 5 more characters slots from NCSoft in Dec.

That's why I was checking to see if anyone else was having issues with credit card fraud lately. I didn't know if it was a problem with the store or not and that others might be experiencing the same thing.

I thought it would be a good thing to look out for the others in the community.
---
I got a call from "the fraud department". I don't like getting calls like that because I know you can't trust them. So I called my bank and they put me through the fraud dept which said that they had tried to contact me.
----
And, yes, anti-virus is up-to-date and I run scans and clean the system regularly.
I highly doubt it was on my end. As I had run the anti-virus update and cleaned the system just before making the purchase. The system scan from the night before and after show the system is clean.
[In fact, I physically disconnect my system from the internet when I'm not using it.]
----
Like I said before, I was posting this to see if anyone else had had issues recently.
To finer detail, since they purchased the animal pack.

Because I called Blizzard about the charge, thinking it had been done internally from 'my' old trial account. The representative told me about the account which my card had been used on - clearly not 'my' account, and about the history of that account (up for about one day before being ban-hammered).

I am now in the process of getting the fraudulent charge reversed.

And I did not get key-logged because my CC info is on file with NCSoft. I simply re-authorized payment from that account. Which is why I suspect the data got captured from their end.

Oh I hate when people don't stay on topic.
