Invention Origin Advice

Hi, all.

My Elec/Elec Scrapper spends a lot of time in RWZ. As a consequence he's sitting on a (to me) rather large amount of influence. In fact, I don't think I can sell another high priced recipe without exceeding 1 billion.

To be honest, I'm really happy with him and his build. He can solo Rikti at Plus 1 Plus 8 with no real difficulty. In other game content, he's always been able to do what I wanted him to do at a level where I have fun with him.

I generally only use inventions that I get in drops ... it's one of my quirks. So other than basic IOs, the only thing he has special on his build is a Steadfast KB Protection IO.

He's currently sitting on 831 million. In his inventory he has 1 Apocalypse Dam/End/Recharge, 1 Armageddon Dam/End Reduction, 1 Ragnarok Dam, and 1 Ragnarok Dam/Recharge/Accuracy.

With that kind of cash, I'm thinking that maybe there's something I can do to make him even better than he is.

Here's the thing: I have NO idea what I should be aiming for!

Like I said, I like his build. Other than moving some slots around, I don't really want to change what he is.

So that's my question. What CAN I do to make him better? What can I make better on him without sacrificing any of his existing damage or damage resistance?

Quick comment... the influence cap is 2 billion, so it's ok to go over 1 billion influence if you weren't aware of that.

Without a little more information it's hard to give more detail. But here's a general priority I place on IO'ing out a new toon:

1. Get endurance under control. The big hitters here are a Miracle Unique (healing IO), a Numina's Unique (also in the healilng IOs). And a Performance shifter proc (endurance mod IOs). 99% of the time I'd place those in health and stamina.

2. Purple damage proc's for my most used attacks. These can get pricy, but they make a pretty big difference without having to revamp an entire build.

3. Recharge... these come from LoTG proc's in defense powers and 5-slotted purple sets. There's other sources, but they're pretty specific to each different build. How much is enough depends on what attack chain you want to be able to run and other variables about your playstyle. This can be some serious money invested (2 billion can disappear fast).

4. Defense... in your case I'd try to get my smashing/lethal defense up as much as possible. The best starting point for doing that will be from getting 4 kinetic combats in each melee attack. Plus the steadfast protection +3 defense IO. Adding more depends on what powers you have. I'd pick up defense pool powers to augment these as much as your endurance allows.

Generally, I have all my IO's planned and purchased before hitting 50, so I don't really go in that order, but if I were to go in order, that's what i'd do. I can see putting defense before recharge, but I'm a damage junkie... it's likely others would say different.

In order to plan things out you'll want Mid's Hero Designer if you don't have it already.

Sounds like you're really enjoying the game... warning, once you start down the path of IO'ing out your toons, you'll find something vast and deliously complex... more so then you'll find in any other MMO i've ever seen. If you have any questions, this is the right place to ask. It's the primarly reason a lot of us are here.

I gotta make pain. I gotta make things right. I gotta stop what's comin'. 'Least I gotta try.

I haven't played elec/elec to any great level so I might be wrong.

I thought grounded gave knock protection (and very high mag at that) so maybe you could transfer the steadfast to another toon. And also elec had tools that gave great endurance management (powersink maybe its consume), so maybe endo management isn't too big of a concern.
Im on my phone right now, so I can't check powersets quickly.

Personally id build for defense and recharge, but again I don't have experience with elec/elec.

The influence cap is 2 billion. These days, that won't get you more than 2-3 damage set purples from the AH. Don't worry, though. It isn't hard to make enough INF in this game to buy those. It just takes time. Spending Hero Merits will allow you to sell expensive IOs on the AH so you can buy purples if that is your goal.

Right now, you have only SO's. Planning a build around IOs almost always results in more endurance, recharge, and survivability. You have to choose which one you want to focus on, though.

With Electric Melee, you won't really do much more DPS than you're doing now. A little global recharge would help get Lightning Strike to recharge faster, but don't expect big damage from your build. Figuring out an attack chain would help you optimize your attacks that you take and use. Search these forums for threads on attack chains.

Increasing resistance through IOs is a futile effort and results in a poor build, usually. Damage bonus is also a futile effort because you can reduce your recharge more to make build-up recharge faster for more overall damage.

Increasing defense to worthwhile levels is much easier and will make your character feel invincible if done right. The key points to reach are 20%, 32.5%, or 45%. The "soft cap" is 45%, and having 32.5% or 20% puts you in range of hitting the soft cap with 1 or 2 small inspirations, respectively. The categories of defense depend on how much offense you want in your build. Going for S/L and E/N gets you the bare minimum coverage, while melee + ranged + AoE covers almost everything. Those aren't the only options, but you should know that gaining defense through sets usually means sacrificing global recharge bonus because most sets don't have both.

My suggestion is to aim for enough recharge for a decent attack chain and get one of those defense levels I mentioned so you can survive almost anything. A dead Scrapper does no damage, but a well-built Scrapper can solo AVs.

Grounded does give you KB protection ... but not when you are using Lightning Rod. That's why I got the Steadfast. Got tired of winding up on my keister when I was using my best attack.

In addition to what BlueBattler said, grounded also stops giving you knockback protection when you are above the ground (jumping or flying). That's why mine has a steadfast slotted.
