Fan Problem

Bloody Strike

So ever since the release of Issue 18, My computer's fan has steadily gotten louder and louder. I ignored it at first thinking it was no big deal. But it's getting the point where it's hard to hear the game over the fan. Anyone have an idea as to what could be causing this? FYI this is only happening with City of Heroes. No other game makes my fan do this.

Fans get loud because they're spinning fast. Fans spin fast because the computer's getting hot. Computers get hot when they're trying to do something hard, or when their cooling isn't working properly.

How old is this computer, and is it a desktop or a laptop?

It's a desktop, I got it April of 2010. I can run Crysis maxed out and the fan doesn't get this loud.

The computer's a year old, which means it's probably starting to have dust problems. Open it up and blow the dust off of anything with a fan or fins. A can of compressed air works wonders for this.

Crysis and CoH stress the computer in different ways. Crysis tends to run the GPU at full power while the CPU is partly idle; CoH is the other way around. If the CPU fan is louder than the GPU fan, CoH will give you a louder computer than Crysis.

Thing is my CPU is water-cooled while my GPU is fan-cooled. I just find it odd that it's so loud for CoH.

Just a blind guess, have you tried lowering the graphic settings?

A fan will also get louder when the bearings are wearing out. The problem with this is that when they fail, the fan fails instantly. Good chance of burning out the GPU.

I can't really help the actual topic.

I just wanted to mention that when I saw the thread title I thought it was a complaint about fanboys defending the devs' decisions.

Is it an AMD or Intel system?

AMD has a 'cool-n-quite' driver that may help. Your specific motherboard may have a driver to speed up and slow down the fans based on the temp. You might want to check and reinstall those drivers if they are available for your system.

For example I just upgraded an old laptop to windows 7 and now the fan in it runs full speed all the time rather then based on the temp readings.

Even if it's water cooled, the radiator can get clogged with dust.

When using compressed air, don't forget to immobilize the fans, don't let them free spin.

I will guess and say it's the video card fan revving up to loud. You graphics driver may have settings to allow you to control that at the expense of the card getting hotter. You should check the temps before playing with that. Also if you recently upgraded drivers, they might have allowed the fan to rev higher.
